homemade feeders by RendonRoo

I have not used the "y" fitting. Just a question to those who do. If the feed goes straight down, do you not get old feed below the "Y" area? I would think it would get old and moldy or something.

that's why i use the 90 degree elbow with a 45 degree elbow. I haven't had a problem with crumbles getting stuck unless it gets wet.

Yep, Mine is a little different than that but serves the same point. No old feed.

I was asking to see if a problem with old feed.

If I understand correctly, if you put sand in the pipe first just until it reaches the bottom of the Y, then you won't have a problem with old feed. The feed will just flow and not go down there at all.

I love this idea. Now I just have to figure out how to set it up in my quail cages.

I read thru this post but I still might have missed it, I use ground feed not pellets or crumbles, do these still work? I'm getting tired of wasted feed in some of my pens and do you use a different size pipe for banty or standard, like a roo with a big comb?

I have recently made the pvc unit with the Y and love it. What I did was filled the bottom with gravel/sand and human grade DE to prevent moisture or food build up. So far, I love it.

I have an chicken automatic water fountian and cooloing watering system! This is so easy and I will never have to lug another hose to the coop and clean out the nasty chicken waters with alge! Please try this soon!

You will only need 5 things......

1) a garden hose (you maybe have one)
2) a timer (get at the garden center)
3) a "bubbler waterer sprinkler" (round ring kind by the water hoses)
4) a cinder or concrete block (lots of styles and sizes)
5) a hot water pan (this is a shallow round pan that fits under your hot water heater and you can get in metal or plastic. Its 2 inches deep and 3 feet in circumfrence.

Put the soaker/bubbler on top of the cinder/concrete block screw in the hose. (you may want to add wire to keep it from falling off) Place the hot water pan under the bottom and turn on the hose.

Its that easy. My chickens are the coolest chicks in town!
I let the pan overflow for a few minutes so the chickens can cool thier feet. I am adding some old bath tiles around the base so they will be even cooler on their feet

This is my method as well, and it is great for a large flock in many pens. I use old (cleaned) bleach bottles with a large hole cut out of the sloping part for drinking. I don't even use a bubbler, just stick the drip tubing right down the hollow neck of the bottle. The bottle is zip-tied to the side of the pen so it moves with the pen. Every night my timer turns on the water and 2-dozen water containers are filled to overflowing (so any floating crud is removed) and the birds have clean water in the morning. Every so often I wipe down the inside of the bottles and manually turn on the system to wash out any algae. You DO have to check to be sure the batteries haven't died in the timer, but if I go out in the morning and see that the first waterer isn't full, I just change the batteries right then.

love it I'm thinking of spliting it off to be able to feed inside and/or out - I ran across one that had 3 tubes - 1 for feed,1for grit - 1 for oyster shell - thought that was interesting too - I'm a newbee still in the planing stage - would like to make feed and water last at least a week I intend to have only 6 girls
