Homemade flock block recipes

Use knox unflavored gelatin as a binder. It comes in small envelopes in an orangish box in the baking section, I believe. I have found that dissolving 1 packet with 1/2 cup of hot water, binds together about 2 1/2 to 3 cups of seed/scratch. Make sure it is completely dissolved, no crystals left, before you mix it with the scratch. Then just pack it into a mold (tupperware container) and solidify in the fridge. Then pop them out to dry out at room temp.

I don't think that bacon grease, or suet, would be very good for the chickens. Bacon grease has a huge amount of sodium, which is really not good for them. A lot of fat is not good for them either. The gelatin has a tiny amount of protein, but not much else.

Knox can get spendy ($6+ for 32 envelopes), I know WinCo in Eastern WA sells a store brand that works just as well for regular "jello-y" purposes. I use it to make suagr free carb friendly gummy bears all the time! But those are for me, not chickens.

Now you know, money is no object when it comes to entertaining our chickens! I figure that I saved $12,000 by having chickens instead of parrots, so that gives me a lot of leeway! Seriously, I hate to think about how much I spend on stuff for them...

I am sooo excited that I dound this thread! I gathered a few things and will be posting back tonight after it is done.... Well, it might be tommorow morning (in the near future anyways). I will include a ingredients list and a temp and length of time in the oven.

Just to let every one know this is a BIG step because I HATE COOKING!!

I have to sit on my hands until I get chickens I can bake these for... I love to cook/bake and regularly make stuff for our dog and cats, much to the dismay of my SO! I make treats for us to though, making Rutabaga Soup (Like Creamy Potato) tonight or tomorrow for dinner.

Last time I was at the feed store, I told DH that I wondered if the girls would enjoy some sweet feed. I used to keep horses, and that was a real treat for them. Think I'll call one of my horsey friends and see if they can spare a gallon or so. I know it has various grains & molasses in it.

On a whim I bought an "Original Forage Cake" for my flock. They, of course, LOVED this overpriced treat, and after looking at the ingredients list I knew I couldn't replicate it. I set out to find the cheapest source. Believe it or not, Sears actually has them online for $7 and change. Compared to the 10 and change of the area feed stores and online chicken supply companies, that's pretty good--it even justifies shipping if I buy a few.

Just .02 for anyone interested

After reading all of your guy's posts i decided to try this out! Heres what i did:

I put 3 eggs and their shells in
Poured rice, cream of wheat, and oatmeal in to it
Shreeded apple, peanut butter, peanuts, and bird seed.

I cooked it for an hour at 350 but it wasnt all the way done.

THis morning i took it out to them and withen 20 minutes it was all gone! Its a good option if you dont want to spent that much money on a treat for them. Even my ducks came up and ate it!
