Hi! I'm new to hatching and forums and I need some advice. My friend and I are making a homemade incubator to hatch chicken eggs but I can't manage to get the humidity up.

The incubator is made from foam board insulator with a 30w bulb which keeps the temp at around 37°c-38°c... That is until I spray water into the incubator (I have a water dish but without spraying it stays around 19% humidity)when I spray water the temp drops to about 30°c. Any advice on getting the temp and humidity right?

When I need to raise the humidity in my incubator, I place clean, warm damp sponges in the incubator. A big shallow pan (such as a roasting pan) with warm (100F) water in the bottom, covered with hardware cloth may help. If I need to raise the humidity during hatch, I place warm moist paper towels in the incubator. I do not worry about adding humidity until day 18 lockdown, but I live in humid Florida.Good luck with your homemade incubator. I hatched my first three broods with a homemade incubator made from a cooler and light bulb.

Welcome!

Sorry that I have no incubator experience, just hatches under a broody hen but it looks like you have the answer you seek.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
