what would happen if I took a couple of eggs and put them under a heat lamp with a cup of water?

would the eggs hatch?

the reason I am posting this is because a freind is trying to do this with a duck egg and 5 chicken eggs that I gave her.

Chances of hatchng are slim to none!
If there is no enclosure to keep the heat stable, (styrofoam box, wooden box, etc...way to hard to regulate temperature and the humidity in an "open air" senerio, would be impossible to obtain any stablility enough to hatch an egg.

Uhhh.... I'm assuming if she stated her friend was gonna add water, that it most likely is enclosed. So, with that said, YES it will work. But you have to keep an eye on the temp and get it to be stable at around 102 degree in a still air incubator.
