Does anyone know how to make a homemade waterer that will be tough in the winter? We have gone through two metal waterers that both are bent out of shape and leaking, mostly from us trying to beat the ice out of them and from just overall use. A new waterer is outrageously expensive, especially if it's metal. I'd rather not use a plastic one because they get all frozen in the winter and then crack when we have to clean the ice out. Is there any way to make a waterer that is durable, but isn't expensive or difficult to make? Thanks!

Ice is a hard one to deal with. I use heated water bowls for mine, but thats only about 20 birds. I also use the black rubber tubs and flip them over and the ice falls out, very durable and comes in larger sizes.

Somewhere in Feeding & Watering, recently, someone posted their biscuit-tin waterer-heater which apparently does well even at 0 F. I see from your info you're from Connecticut. I believe that would work in your climate, too. ?
