Homemade Yogurt **Updated** Cheese and Buttermilk

Ms. Prissy , I have 2 Nanny goats that are about ready to let their liitle ones stop nursing. I have NEVER milked an animal so I was wondering . How do I do it ?? I know that I would need to wash her udders off real good but with what ?? Then what would I do next ??? I think it would be a great experience for my 2 boys. I don;t do yougurt but buttermilk I use alot. I have never had goat milk !!! So could you help me out a little ??? Thanks Livia

We made smoothies - strawberry - with the kefir with a bit of honey. Yummy!

You need a good book on milking goats - something like Storey's Guide to Dairy Goats is a good place to start. Go to youtube and look at milking videos. It really isn't something I can explain. Find someone local and let them show you.

Anything that touches your milk must be properly cleaned. Heat glues milk proteins to your equipment and can cause off colored tastes to your milk.

Check out http://hoeggergoatsupply.com/xcart/home.php A really good place for supplies.

I did it! Tastes great too! I'm so excited! Looking forward to ordering the mozzarella ingredients soon and trying that as well now. Thanks MissPrissy for starting this thread so long ago! And thank you everyone for the welcomes

Leave out the sugar and you'll like it just as well, and it'll be better for you. I was hesitant about the taste, and planned on adding sugar. I decided, on the first batch, just to go by MissPrissy's recipe exactly. It is fantastic. I do adore the little (and I mean little) drizzle of honey on it, though.

Enjoy!

How did they arrive to you? Dried? Since I got mine directly out of someone's refrigerator, I've never seen any that were mailed before. Are you feeding them milk to grow them? When I looked at some of the auctions for the grains, I had to chuckle at the descriptions of "enough grains to make a quart (or whatever) of kefir a week." All you have to do is grow those suckers for a little while, then you have enough to make a gallon a day if you want!

It came wet in a baggie. One large cluster grain the size of a quarter. But of course it was smashed in the mail so it was a squished mess. I put it in milk and now I have 3 clusters. It took 3 days for the first milk to grow any grains - because it was all squished. LOL

MissPrissy or any one that uses Vanilla in their yogurt... I am wanting to try my next batch with some vanilla, since I know my little girl loves it. I am thinking I should add it after I take it off the heat, is that correct? Also, my vanilla is the real stuff from mexico, so it may have alcohol in it (?) I dont really know I just know it is very very potent and a tiny bit goes a long way. Not sure how much to add since I usually use about half of what any recipe calls for. Do you think it will turn out ok adding this or not? I am only going to do one qt. and see. Just thought I would ask and see if anyone had any thoughts on it.

Thanks!

I use a vanilla that is extracted in bourbon. I use 1 tbsp for a quart - 2 quarts. The alcohol in the yogurt is so diluted it may as well not be in there. You'll be fine using it.

I make yogurt the same way. I LOVE it. I like it plain with a 1/2 teaspoon of splenda in it, also with agave nectar in it, but I love it with fresh fruit in it. I really like that fact it is more like pudding than yogurt to me. Yummmy!
