What did you do in the garden today?

Spied this at the lake but picked a smaller one for the chooks. These are great to dry and use as herbs for both birds and humans.

It never bolted? If it ever does I would save the seeds to see if you have a randomly cold hardy perennial Swiss chard variety

I keep chard through the winter also. Row covers over the beds and I harvest kale, chard and carrots all winter. It slows growth dramatically in winter, but if I get it big enough before really cold weather I can pick some every week all winter long.

I had some with a 2017 expiry. Too bad i threw them around at the end of summer because so many germinated.

I tried some at the beginning of this year that were “sell by December 2014” and didn’t get anything but it can’t hurt to try these. I found some more 2014 a few months ago in the not climate controlled garage so I have basically 0 hope for those but I might as well try to prove myself wrong

I planted pepper seeds that were in a bottle from 2 or 3 years ago and almost every one of them germinated but after I put them in the garden they almost all died. I have some mint seeds I'm going to try to plant but they're from probably 2012 or older.

11 summers with temperatures getting over 90°f and winters getting to around 25° I have 0 hope for these but trying has never hurt anyone (ignore the fact that trying stuff has definitely hurt people) so why not

This is chard is at least three seasons old. It started out in the garden first yeat, got moved to landscaping next, than back to the garden last summer. Even down to 0 deg F, covered with loose leaf litter, I can harvest off of it in winter.

Storms brewing, we wont get much but at least the heat wave has broken.

I wonder why that was. You would think after they germinate the age wouldn’t really matter that much but I guess it can. Plants are weird

Been pruning the Chinese Pepper tree out the back yard again - all this winter rain just makes the thing grow and grow.
Also been cleaning out nests in the finch avairy and putting them in water to soak the poop off.
Then the birds have been getting great handfuls of chickweed.
Oh - it must be breeding season coming up - just look at the birdy reaction.
