Homeschool~ Between years testing, who else has to test their kids?

Ok here's where our schooling is different, too.

Since we do the homeschooling, I feel like we can choose when their "breaks" are.

My kids are schooled year round. Not as heavily during the month of July, but in August we'll pick it up.

We try to incorporate learning into everything they do. This year, they are learning a little about gardening, with the hopes of planting their own garden next spring.

They help build all our pens, so they are learning about measuring, inches and feet, etc.

From November 15 to January 1, my kids are on "break", even though they might still do some things on their own. Truth be told, I am the one who needs to have t he break from November to Jan. It's holiday time, lots of family/friends stopping in, etc. I just really works out well that I only have to worry about baking/cooking and presents for those few weeks.

But even then, we find things for the kids to do. Like baking, helping with main dishes, learning about sharing and the reason for Christmas (in our house anyway, people all believe different) and the truth behind how all holidays came about (they weren't originally Christian holidays).

We use that time to talk about different cultures and beliefs, and who's celebrating how and why.

Makes for interesting conversations.

Naaahh you didn't kill it.

Question for all the fellow educators: How many school year round?

We've never done year round - my kids would not stand for it!

Oddly enough I think my last one is about ready to start back up...

We aren't starting until August 31 this year though because I am just too busy.

When we first started (8 years ago now - holy cow!) I was more in tune with the schools around us - but honestly I haven't thought about them in years. I could care less when they break - go back - whatever. We take days off when we feel like it and we do whatever we want.

This year we are doing Middle School Physics class and he is going to go to Space Camp for the Spring and will (finally) finish up his Lego Mindstorms NXT robot. I love middle school...my daughter graduated 2 years ago so finally we are back into "big kid" stuff.

I feel like his 7th grade year will finally take everything he's been learning all these years and put it all in context. This will be the first year we even discuss American History - we have been doing ancients/Europe for so long - in fact we went through it twice.

Also - this is the second year of Japanese so he's getting good a that...and the novels are beginning to become books I'd read myself.

I love homeschooling!

Seriously, non-homeschooling parents have no idea what they are missing.

I don't understand the question. Are you looking to have your child attend a school on-line? Or are you looking for a free online placement test?

Free online placement tests. Sorry.

Very true. The bad apples are the ones that worry me as well.

My kids were so excited to turn one of our extra bedrooms into a classroom and to decorate it with their computers, books, puzzles and learning posters. We found tons of supplies at our local dollar store. Still on the search for an inexpensive Periodic Table of the Elements poster to hang.

It sounds like fun!

I wanted my GD to be homeschooled, but her mother wouldn't consent. She also thought she wouldn't get "socialized" with home-schooling.
I don't know why anyone would think that...I don't know anyone who home-schools that lock their children up and don't allow them to talk to other people!
IMO home-schooled children have much better people skills than the ones that are in public schools, who only speak to other children, and have no respect or consideration for any adults that in the school. ( I went to public school...I remember how it was, and I know it is far worse now than it was then).
I did however get her to finally consent to a Christian school near me so I will be picking her up every day, and I can help her with her work. Public school here, has gotten so bad, I just shutter everytime I think about it.

Anyway, my point was to suggest to Ferngully to have the kids make their own Periodic Table of Elements chart to hang up. What better way to learn than by doing a project about something.
