Homeschooling - SUPPORT GROUP

WELCOME EVERYONE NEW!

What is everyone planning to do over the summer? I think we are going to be year round with breaks here and there. That way we can get about 1.5 years of school done every year. My 7 year old is already in 2nd grade science. Good thing I have up through 6th grade LOL. He love science. He will even do that on his own.

I have not been on here much. Our church asked my 7 year old to sing in a local competition within our church system. We had to work hard since we only had 2 or 3 weeks notice. He won that and is now headed for the state competition. If he wins that we will be taking a nice long trip to Kansas City MO for the National competition. I think we will make a learning trip out of it if we can. Now to get the chickens thinned down enough that it will be easy for someone to help while we are gone.

It is just going to be a busy year for us. Hubby is going to try to get his hips replaced, we need to finish and sell our other house, start planning the new house at the farm, I MIGHT have some minor nose surgery too.... chickens have to take a back seat and most will have to go. I am only going to keep what will be nearly impossible to replace. If I don't pop in much PLEASE keep the thread alive. I like to hear what everyone is using or doing to keep the kiddos excited about school.

We usually work all year but take long breaks in between. Its not unheard of for us to take the entire month of December off, or six+ weeks in August-September when it gets SO hot here you can't even think straight. We also take a week or two here and there when road trips to visit family pop up, or if we have people here visiting.

My oldest started high school this year & I am really struggling. I've asked if she wants to start the local charter so we can get help with tutors, meet new people, get the right precollege courses in, go to prom, etc... but she's completely not going for it. Her logic is that, "Prom is overrated." and "I can take college courses on line." Both of these are true statements, so how can I argue with that? Still, I might have to buckle & find a tutor. I've also got a 5th/6th grader & a 2nd grader.

I love this thread & welcome all ideas & advice.

Good luck @DMRippy it sounds like you have a crazy year ahead!

thanks for the links. I often hit a rut n need a fresh area of study to keep boys interested.

While talking to a mom at a soccer game, she mentioned the up coming test at public school that will determine the placing of the students for the following year... it makes me sad that only a few will be offered the chance to excel. Many will be weaned out of the excelled program...wth... don't wew ant MORE kids to be pulled into learning, not pushed out........ my current peeve with the local public school district.

Ive had a few too many conversations with the powers that be at the public school. From the principle at middle school to the superintendent most recently....... the autocratic/ beaurocratic excuse for everything is remarkably short sighted and stagnating. Little do they know my boys do so well in public school because of all the work they do at home as well. And a mom that puts in the hours too.

Keep up the good work everyone.....it pays off in spades!

Will be following. We are taking over after Elementary School for our last 3. Decided to pull our sixth grader out of public school starting this coming Monday. NC will have some issue with it but we'll handle issues as they come. Apparently we've got to submit some special paperwork since we are outside of the declaration period for establishing a homeschool. It is pleasantly surprising to find a support group here. Now, we've got to find some local homeschool folks who we can connect with.

I will be joining soon. If you can get a discount code from a local HS group that might help. My umbrella school has a discount for members.

Not much they can do about it, you can pull at any point. When I pulled my son it was the last quarter of the year- granted it was only Kindergarten, (He's finishing up second now.) You have the right to pull your child at any point. Yes, HSLDA is definitely a good thing. I keep saying I am going to join, but haven't yet.

did a ton of reading on it last nigh5. We've missed the dates to establish a homeschool and several parents have been hauled into court for taking kids out of school on NC. That is according to HSLDA and the state specific section they have on their web page. We will wait on the 5th grader but are taking the 6th grader out now.

Definitely get them then.

We have been homeschooling our oldest (16) a few years now, and have decided to pull our other two out of the performing arts school they are in and homeschool them also. The PA school has made a drastic turn in the last few months and several children are now talking about leaving.

Not sure what we are using with the oldest, but will ask my wife. My oldest usually has her day's work done in about 2 hours ( it is computer based) and usually volunteers 3 days a week at the nursing home, (she has done that since she was 12)
