Don't wild grapes have male and female vines? You would need to make sure to transplant some of each or you won't get grapes. I don't have a source on that but I'm 90% sure that is the case.

Wild grapes do have male and female vines. You'll most likely find vines with and without grapes. I wrote to our Garden columnist. Carol Bradford and she enlightened me. I have more than a few without but only one that had grapes. It not being rooted on MY property concerned me. She said to take cuttings, but I haven't looked up how to do so.

Now I do have some Concord grape vines a friend gave me. Long story, house being sold, come and dig these up and I did. These pics are second year. I hope for some grapes next year. Though I still have some in the freezer. Plus 17 cups from another friend and the four cups of wild I picked this year.

IMO there is plenty of free food out there. Folks have just not been taught how to feed themselves.

I had a wild grape vine in the area where we put the chicken run. Note the word HAD. It took about 1 week for them to completely strip that poor vine. I am wondering if it will come back in the spring.

I learned to surround everything with chicken wire. Hence the pics. They strip everything, or eat the berries. Too they dust in the soft soil around my plants, scratching out the fresh compost. 24" high should do it. Also my garden has 24" poultry wire behind the rustic fencing. I keep adding more branches as I find them or make them. A few everyday or whenever.

As long as your roots are okay the should comeback. Surround it now though.

I think they will come back. My nephew came to visit during the summer and decided to mow the backyard grass where the garden is and 4 grape vines that hubby planted but didn't tend to, well he doesn't know how grape vines look like and mowed everything to the ground. I came home and didn't even tell him what he did, just thanked him for helping without being asked. A week later 3 of the 4 vines had sprouted back up.

For the berries I will plant them outside the run and use chicken wire like rancher hicks for when the chickens are out free ranging.

good question. On that I'm not 100% sure. We have around 50 grape vines so I might have both. That might require some research.
