Homesteaders

Has anyone tried taters on a dirt mound? In theory, if the hill was 3-4 feet tall and you planted around the edge of the top, wouldn't the "harvest" be easier on your back? Sort of like a natural raised bed, there is a garden style that only uses the mounds of dirt for ease of harvesting.

Will potatoes grow downward?? If so then I don't see why it wouldn't work to some extent

Thanks for sharing! This year I did a red early variety and kenebecs. They all did ok except we had some taters that were rotten in the ground that I think was due to excessive rain at the end of the season and that being a low spot. The kenebecs are great potatoes. Will definitely grow them again
did you grow them in towers? The catalog mentions using raised beds, but raised is subjective. A hill would still be raised imho.

So here's my deal. I've got Columbian Rocks and they're a good dual purpose line. If anyone would like to buy or trade for hatching eggs I'm open to the offer. They've just started laying. At least four of the hens have. I've got six and will be hatching more. I've offered them all forsale in CL but no one wanted to pay my price. I really hate when folks are no shows, don't you?

Now things you might have that I can use are, cuttings from fruit bearing plants, or fruit bearing plants, seeds, yarns, or hatching eggs of something I don't have, (not silkies, they are NOT real chickens but aliens from another planet) We have done a Granny Square swap for all those ladies and gents that crochet or knit.

Very interested in this breed, not sure what I can trade for them.

I decided to skip the spuds next year. There is a farm only a few miles from me who grows and sells the most wonderful potatoes of all sorts. I don't feel it necessary to take business from him just so I can save few dollars. He can grow the spuds for me. :)

might be a good opportunity to see if he would barter for some or all of the price!

Rancher Hicks~ I love the picture of your chickens..I will have to look into that breed when I have more room available for them where did you get them? I have only gotten mine from Tractor Supply.

I just got the little catalog from the place in Maine to buy my potato seed too. I have no clue which potato to plant either.

To answer your question about the Hosta's you eat the freshly grown shoots if I remember correctly you sauté them.

great idea!! I could see if he wants something I grow and just plant extra. Or, I could talk to him about maybe eggs for spuds over winter. He could have fresh eggs I could have fresh spuds. Thank you. I love barter system. It makes for less stress and less greed. More food to go around and less hungry people. "Oh you need food, well I need my yard mowed. I don't have cash but I can make a meal to send with you to your family ". Or something along those lines anyhow. Plus there would be less people taking advantage of others.

Ok off my tangent now. Greed makes me sick, I apologize.
