Homesteaders

I wish I could get such a deal around here.
By the way I mentioned you in the fodder forum. My trial did well I used wheat seeds.
So today was the first day of feeding out my oat sprouts and it was a smashing hit!

I split the mat in 2 and put them in hog pans for the girls. I tried to break them up some to help make sure everyone got some. They went bonkers for them and when i went out for lock up there was not a single oat left!

DW and I had a farm meeting over dinner tonight to talk more about the upcoming year. We discussed adding a pair or trio of feeder pigs. She said that she is ok with it as long as i do the math and make sure it is worth it and make a plan of when, where, how etc. I need to also take into account the 2 long weekend trips we currently have planned this summer as that is additional work we would need covered and probably too much in combo with our chickens for just 1 person (such as MIL who usually helps out when we are gone).

This then turned to talking about feeding animals for the next year. We decided that I will also put my research efforts into pricing out equipment to mix our own feed as that would be double benefit if we do pigs. We had discussed it for the chickens along but didnt think it was worth it then. I need to see if buying a grinder and a gravity wagon would be worth it over time vs buying bagged feed from the mill. It also would involve me talking with the neighbor to buy corn from his when he trucks in the spring. He is our renter and we give him a steal on our land, so I am hoping he will return the favor with cheap corn. if that all adds up we will go for it.

@KlopKlop your birds are beautiful, I'm sure it was a great treat, I'm still letting mine free range as it's still green but will be giving them the trial fodder I did on day 9. Then start a system as soon as it freezes and there is no more green outside.
I will also be reducing the flock some, the extra roosters are consuming too much feed it's time for freezer camp and only be left with 3 or 4 for spring hatching.

I still let my girls out during the day, but they dont usually go too far. May be because it looks like this...

I place the dogs' living quarters behind the coop and keep their heated bucket in front of the coop, while feeding them down the yard a ways on the porch of the shed, so this leaves well beaten pathways in the snow all around the coop and down to the chicken's favorite winter time lounge area. This allows my chickens to go for a stroll on a nice textured by dog paws highway without an ounce of work from me. Works for everyone.

i scooped out my deep litter coop this weekend and spilled a bit of bedding in the snow outside of the coop and they seemed to like standing on that and scratching around. Some of by bigger girls dont mind the cold but i have a few dark cornish and white laced red cornish that are fine feathered and hardly ever come out now that it is under freezing.
