Homesteaders

Yuck. Yuck yuck yuck. Lol Danvers are my top choice for bulk, fresh taste, and canning. The rainbow ones were almost bitter, and they didn't grow nearly as well as the good old Danvers. I did the purple dragon ones too, and they were IMPOSSIBLE to get out of the ground without a fork, almost like they had supergrip in the soil. They were also bitter, but not as bad as the rainbow blend. Almost spicy. The kids hated them lol

I may see if I can find the rainbow types at the market.

I found a pole type pea in the Seeds from Italy catalog. The catalog has some varieties I'll like to try, though the prices are high at $3.25 a pack.

I also have picked out "Touchon" an old French variety of carrot to try. I plan to make a special bed just for root crops with a sandy/loamy/compost soil 10-12 inches deep. I'm only picking out varieties that grow 8" long.

We tried the Blue potatoes but no one liked them. I'll scratch the rainbow carrots.

They do have chickpeas that I haven't seen but I don't like Humus. DW does though.

A friend is taking me to an Amish market next week, she says they sell things in bulk and also in smaller quantities, it's about and hour and half away from me but still looking forward and hoping to find good deals. We need fresh veggies and greens.

She will also be giving me cow manure (it's the best alternative I can find to horse manure) and will deliver it since we don't have a truck. I plan on laying card boards down like Rancher and the manure on top, then will mix it soil and chicken manure from the old Duck and chicken run. Hoping this will reduce weeding need. Will plant corn there and will also use some on the raised beds.

I recently read about this while at Barnes and Nobles.

The author of the article wrote the book, "Compost Everything: the good guide to extreme composting".

Basically what the article said was that things like horse manure and cow manure , sheep and other grazing animals that eat crops sprayed with this GRAZON is poisonous to your gardens. Used in your compost, it poisons your compost.

I bought hay this past fall for my chickens but now am worried I might have made a mistake. I mix the hay and chicken manure into my compost piles.

That "Free" manure may not be a good thing. I too have gotten free manure.

If you have experienced crop failure it might be due to the use of this POISON. You can research this for further information.

I will be posting this to CL where I found hay. I've also bought Straw from CM and I'm not sure how to find out if it's been poisoned.

Please spread the word to everyone so they can avoid loss of their crops. It can take years to undo the damage.

I get my pure poo from a friend with alpacas and the garden does very well with it. How does one find out if "grazon" is used on the ingredients in alpaca or chicken feed? What is "grazon" used on? Is buying organic the only way to be sure it wasn't used? I think that would double my feed costs.

My friend grows her own hay with no spaying and feeds them organic feed. I worked with her

It's not likely to be in the feed but in the hay that animals eat.

I have a 100% pure source of manure. The horses are only fed organic there for only produce organic poo. So if anyone needs pure poo let me know.

I could use a truck load but you're a bit far from me. I will be checking to see whether it's being used around here. I'm not sure how long this Grazon has been on the market. It should be banned, like many of these things.

I don't pay for the horse feed but I know I can't afford to change to a higher cost feed. My girls (and 3 boys) go through 3 bags a month plus a 50lbs bag of corn every 3 months. And lots of horse paddock cleaning, they love cleaning run-ins and horse feet.

I will be looking further into the grazon stuff though. I want as natural a diet as possible.
