Homesteaders

We live on a tight budget so we eat a lot of rice and chicken seasoned in a million ways . I know college and starting out is hard , that's why I'm making the book for them. Each recipe can be altered to fit the budget. Usually we can feed all 8 of us for less than $20 worth of groceries.

I know my only point is often harder to feed one as cheaply as a family. I found it much harder. Chicken does not come in single servings (or they jack up yhe proce per pound if they do, then you need to find away to keep the rest of the chicken in a small or shared frige.
I think you recipe book is a great idea, i really do. I did something similar with all of my grandmas recipes. I was mearly remarking how hard it is alone.

I am in the process of making a chicken tractor. I have a bunch of old farrowing crate cages (this used to be a hog farm 30 years ago) I think they are going to work on my tractor. I am going to use the cages as the main support of the walls. It is almost like it was all made to go togeather.
It will end up being 7 × 20, with space for storage and water. I do not have pictures yet, i will take some tomorrow.
I still have not settled on building a gabled roof of a single slant.

I got 20+ pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts at the store last week for 99 cents a pound. I plan to can some of it for quick meals. I'm going to try to season some for chicken taco's, some for bar-b-que chicken sandwiches, and some as a chicken stew. It's nice to have supper started and sitting in the cupboard. No thawing, no "use it before it spoils" and no worry of loosing a freezer full of food of the power goes out. All that for about 3 hours of kitchen time.

@wyoDreamerThat's our plan this summer. Only hubby wants to raise out some meaties for it. We camp a lot and not having to take ice to keep food good will be nice. We are going to try some burger that way as well. Gotta love good old fashioned know how .

I wish I had known about canning back when I was in college. I had time and access to supplies (gardening and such) during the summer, and it would have really helped having prepped meals ready while working 2 jobs and going to school full time.

That's a geek point!! Yet another reason I can use for my kids to learn how to garden and can. Fresh canned soup and meals will not only save time but a lot of money in tight times . Who knows, my kids might think I'm a crazy old lady.

Ummm.. they don't think you are little off now? I know mine do.. about me... that is. Good luck with trying to get the kids to can stuff. Usually getting them to help garden is easy.

I know mine think I am weird, but they love the free salsa and pears I have supplied them with enough to not say it during the summer canning sessions. Granted the ones who receive the goods get it hand delivered by my Dad when he has a semi load headed that way, 2 states over. But if we call the people on here weird isnt that the pot calling the kettle black? Lol
