Homesteaders

We're going away for three weeks in may/june and I'm trying to get things in the ground before we go. Do you think they'd grow a great deal in three weeks so I couldn't add more soil to the top when I get back?

That depends on many things, so I couldn't say for certain....but if you are worried about it, bury them good before you leave and let them work their way up and out of it. Just leave a few leaves upside of the compost and then just have faith. What will be will be at that point.

I have to agree with Beekissed about the Brandywines. I grew them for the first time last year and they are all that Beekissed says. They have quickly become my favorite tomato, and I plan to plant them again this year.

Later.....OOPS! Didn't realize I was a couple of pages behind. See what happens when you don't check in for 24 hours...LOL

I had some Pink brandywine seeds leftover and they're coming up so I guess I'll be trying them again.

Brandywine..thanks for the tip, I will need to look them up

I'm starting to get a bit irritated about spring. I want to plant things and get more chicks and build my cow area . However I can not do any of that until life thaws out.. I started my garden, then it froze. I got 12 new chicks now I need more. I have the plans drawn up for the cow area I even have the start of my materials, but it's flipping freezing out and with the ground hard I can't dig for posts.

So I'm stuck watching seeds spring paper towels in my kitchen. Grrrr Mother nature please give us warmth I need my veggies.

:D. I keep having to remind myself it is only April, and I need to calm down. Generally we cannot get out until May (other then the cold tolerant plants) I know this, but I still want to get out there, now.
We have been pretty warm here, but we are dangerous dry. We need rain.

@Beekissed I have all of my plans drawn up for my cattle/goat/sheep area. All of my reading and talking to other farmers/homesteaders around here I have decided that everyone (including chickens ) will share grazing areas. They all eat a mess of different types of stuff. Plus with an assortment of animals I will never be short on food for the family. We have also decided that 1 of the fields we are allowed to use we will plant forage on so we can hay it for winter use. There is enough land that they will have fresh all 3 seasons and always free aces to water since there are small ponds all over the hill.

It all sounds very lovely....can't wait to see the pics of all your livestock out on pasture!

Have you made decisions about what and how many you are going to keep? And about what kind of hay you'll be planting....going to stick with native grasses?

I'll have to live vicariously through you, as it's not likely I'll ever get to live on a farm again this side of Heaven.
