I was born and raised in a big town (well, about as big as they come in Oklahoma) so it was quite a revelation to me how much I thoroughly enjoy all of this work. I honestly feel a little like I was missing out before.sure there are things I miss about living in town. But I love having my own little place of solitude, hearing the birds in the morning and getting out there with a chainsaw and ripping through the brush. Bwhahahaha!

Most folks will tell you they wouldn't have "time" for all of that stuff and wonder how you find the "time" for homesteading. It's all about choices. Most of those same folks find the "time" to watch their favorite TV shows or spend time on their cell phones or computers. It's all about priorities, really.

I have time and even did when working full time and raising three boys as a single parent...because I organized my work and prioritized my time and it didn't involve sitting in front of a TV all evening.

Time is the least of my problems. I have 18 hours a day to work my farm and the 2 others I help on. Its the Fact that I run out of steam be for all the work is finished. On a plus side , there is always tomorrow to finish. The animals don't care if only half of the barn is painted and the vegetables don't care if you wait one more day to finish the fencing. I have had people ask me about my "time for fun". Hmmm let me think. My lifestyle is my fun. I enjoy my plants and animals and working makes money opposed to spending it on a gym membership. There will never be enough time to accomplish all your dreams in 1 lifetime, that's because as you reach one goal you should always make another and strive for more. Not more money , not more belongings just more life, and more happiness.

Was thinking about a grow house or hoops, seems like they need shading, which would also keep off the wind; right? Probably do the hoops this year since trying to get other projects done. We get a lot of high 90s-lower 100s temps here in summer. Would those hoops still work or make it hotter still?

Just make sure you don't close in the ends tight - my grow house had one side open, just mesh, in the summer so the heat wouldn't build up. Maybe build a small hoop house and experiment to see how to keep it from overheating.

Haha, we are in the middle of a chicken coop build and have already planted our garden this year. It's only 400 square foot plus a handful of containers on our deck. Te rest of the acreage is overgrown with brush. The majority of our time this year will be clearing it out. Since we don't have access to big equipment, we are doing it all in very small portions. I read through forums and research largely at night after the kiddos have gone to bed and when the husband goes to work (overnights ).

Get a goat - it will clear that brush for you in no-time! lol

Get a Brush Hog, it will chew through the brush in no time, and it's a lot easy to keep in the fences when it is not eating the brush....

A brush hog might not try to escape but it's no fun to pet either.
