Homesteaders

Will be following your progress, so far I only have seeds, im yet to get any tubs or a strainer
How many birds do you want it to feed? if it is only a little, lots of the tutorials i have read use various sizes of Glad tupperware type containers with good success. These small Sterlite containers seem like a great option especially for the price. Even if this prototype flops i would try and rework it using the same style tubs

I cheat with my fodder system. We eat Chinese once a month so I keep the containers and grow in those. Poke holes and stack like with the safelite tubs. Remove lid from top one as sprouts reach it. Only difference is I have to use 3 stacks of 2. I also put it on top of my freezer for the constant heat.

That is a good idea! I looked for good containers to recycle and couldn't find anything big enmigh

Hoping everyone is having a happy holiday time. It has been warm over here and on Christmas day and eve we could sit outside and enjoy the sun and warmth, On the down side, the plants that were supposed to be dormant due to low temperature are already germinating, The onion bulbs I planted a couple of weeks ago are already germinating, hoping once it freezes up they will come up again in spring. Anyone else having the same situation?

Every year, my onions and bulb flowers pop up early, then it frosts then warms back up again. They seem to do ok, but our winters are very mild compared to surrounding areas mostly because of the fact I live in a valley instead of up on the prairie. We get "snow" for maybe a week in the winter, and I mean 2-3 inches of white that lasts a couple of days if we are lucky before it melts.

Are they the winter onions? They will do that, it is ok for the plant, just make sure they have mulch over them.
