Homesteaders

I wouldn't call my first run a total failure.  only the oldest bin is gross, so i have laid the rest out to finish sprouting with the lids off while i rework the stacking.  If it was as easy as poking some holes and stacking the bins like that i suppose everyone would do it.  Learn and keep moving!

It's a learning process

How cool are these oat sprouts!?!?

4 day old sprouts, just coming up

5 day old sprouts are over an inch tall

These aren't growing quite as vigorously as i thought they would but are doing pretty well. I think it may be a touch cool for them on my porch/laundry room. Our house stays in the low 60's an is probably a couple degrees cooler on the porch. I continue to learn as i go :) This weekend i am going to set up a grow hut in the basement with lights and a little warmer. Then i can grow sprouts in that for a few months until I am ready to start seeds for the garden.

no fancy set up. Its the container from a veggie tray . Soaked 2 days ,rinsing every 12 hours, then spread on the "lid" and covered with the tray.

4 day old lentils. I love the sprouting. Not only do the chickens enjoy it, I have fresh sprouts for salads and egg rolls.

Hi all. Took out a bunch of books from the library. The latest I've looked at is the art of French gardening. " Potager" anyone?

1. Who here grows pole beans and what kind? I'm thinking freezing and storage as I talk of vegetables to grow so keep that in mind.

2. Also who dries their own beans for the year?

I'd like pole beans for space saving but there seem to be few pole types available.

I'm not hearing to much about "Storage" part of homesteading. 3. What grows best, what stores best, how much you store for the year that sort of stuff.

4. Anyone here keep a journal? 5. Anyone here map our next year's garden plans.

DW and I are sick. She more so than me right now, but I've been on anitbotics for four days. She just started hers.

Anyhow I've been real sick and plans are to give up my chickens. I hope to focus more on the garden. Doc says stay out of the cold and away from the chickens. Well how can I do that? I've been literally dragging myself out to open up and make sure they have food and water. Five coops is a bit to much for me now. The snow made it hard to drag my gallons of hot water out. Only once though have I needed it.

5. We were watching "Dr. Pol" on the tablet last night. Amazon. Anyone watch his show. It was pretty good I thought. We have basic cable but it's really bad.

6. Anyone got new seed catalogs? Any that they prefer and any they just toss right off the bat?

Well hope I gets some answers.

Everyone I hope you have a happy and prosperous new year.

You are great!!!! New idea for may. We all decide what seeds we want and place one big order to be shipped just before the gathering. I know it would be too late for spring planting but every penny saved on x helps with y.

I do plan on growing beans to dry but haven't yet. My SIL does and has for years. She is also a big time homesteader . They actually got my family started.

Love watching Dr. Pol!!!!!! I let my children watch it, nothing wrong with them learning about all aspects of animals, my oldest finds it very interesting. I just started last year of keeping track of what I plant and what does well, but I would like to start weighing how much produce I get from the garden instead of counting jars at the end of the season.

We don't have TV here but I have had the occasion to watch Dr. Pol on the PC and I love his show...very interesting, especially since they stopped trying to blur out the more earthy moments of blood, birth, etc. I haven't been able to find any episodes of Season 8 and was wondering if they cancelled him?
