Homesteaders

I just moved to this place last summer. The asparagus was already here full of weeds. This spring I started to pull weeds and 1 completely died. The other 2 wilted very bad, but are coming back slowly. The weeds I pulled did not have deep roots but only an inch or so.

Can you see the stalks of aspergus. As for the urine thing I don't know why that would keep someone from eating it. Heck in my case since I "mark" my yard it might help. This got thrown in, in a hurry so I didn't prepare the bed well. I will the next time. I expect to use a spade to loosen things up and then pull the weeds. Then work in some compost around the stalks.

Rhubarb in raised beds. Clean up will take time.

Potato towers. The chickens have been working the newspapers.

Can you see the raspberry shoot outside the log? I've dug up around the plants taking out the hard soil and added some compost.

The squash and pumpkins are started under the mini greenhouses. They should be coming up soon. That pile of green is "road lilies". I've been moving them to the outside of the garden fencing.

Big Delores and her gang. She must be five, but still lays. I hate the misinformation about chickens quitting after two years. She should be going broody soon. She always does.

If asparagus is anything like other plants it should do great next season after you "baby" it this year and weed and all that nice stuff. I'm not for sure but I know that's how all my blackcap bushes did. Someone planted them many years ago and they got neglected for the past 15 years. As well as my raspberries and apple trees . Once I started weeding and picking fruit the plants went crazy. Maybe that's what your asparagus needs , some serious love and TLC.

Well I wonder if I can pick the stalks that are there. Just about 5. Which would be a portion for one.

Rainy here and I spread some more newspaper mulch.

Plans to go and get horse manure tomorrow.

Planted more Kale but so far nothing is coming up. Lettuce and spinach too.

Have you checked soil temperature? It may still be a bit cool for seeds to germinate...

Making grape jelly. Any advice on how to strain out the crystals? Why did the pitcher with an open top form more crystals than the one covered with plastic wrap? I ladled out the juice avoiding the crystals but will be letting it sit another night as I'm busy today. Should I let it sit uncovered? Would that help with crystal formation and make a better jelly?

Hurry I need advice. I have made Grape jelly before and it turned out well but remember using the pitcher with the top that had openings. Kinda like these. I remember lots of crystals then too.

The pitcher without the top and covered with plastic wrap formed fewer crystals.
