Homesteaders

That's why I was thinking crockpot. I've cooked more outside on a fire in the last 5 yrs than she has inside or anywhere besides microwavable dinner her whole life. I like to bring the dutch ovens and cast iron's camping. Moving in with me is a whole new world for her.

God bless a man who can and will cook!

I predict her culinary life is about to open up....I hope she grows to appreciate the clean, flavorful quality of real food.

She can now fix an amazing deer chicken fried steak. Which is what I do with most of it. And some campfire biscuits with the left over flour and some milk. Things she never had or even heard of before.

If she only had canned some of the hundreds of tomatoes that spoiled this year and still a hundred peppers on the vine when I came home from a job. She's learning though. But it was a lot of wasted effort on my part to build such a garden that isn't touched when I'm gone on a job.

Love chicken fried deer steak with peppered milk gravy!
We have plenty of freezer space so just scaled, skin and freezer bag our tomatoes.
I wasted some tomatoes this yr, should've brought them in to finish ripening earlier. Was covering them most every frost, missed one and a lot of them froze. Chickens loved them though.
Did make a awesome green tomato casserole, wow it was good even DW liked it, neither of us have ever tried it before. Made a few qts of sweet bread and butter sliced green tomatoes also, excellent on ham sandwiches.

I didn't even let my chickens out yesterday, and they didn't seem to mind. I gave them plenty of straw and leaves and scattered some bread crumbs and BOSS. Today I opened up the coop, but they only came out when they heard me outside. Guess they're liking the bigger coop I made for them.

Stoking up the wood furnace at least 3x/day! At this rate, my wood may not last until the end of January or February. Fortunately, my wood supplier said he'd be happy to bring me a cord anytime. The wood is pretty dry and cut on the small side, so I think that's one reason it's burning so fast. Any bigger though, and I'll have a hard time with it. But I'm so enjoying the warmth compared to my previous heat pumps. I always felt like I was paying for nothing and cold all winter!

It was about 18 here in western MD yesterday! Freezing rain and more cold temps tomorrow.

Beer can. My chickens just make it into the garden the other day. I led then in with some scratch. Tomatoes and peppers still hanging after several good freezes with no covering.

Garden nut. I just switched (again) stoves in the house and even with green wood I have to stock it at least 4x a day. I have a wee little bitty ranger wood stove I bought the other year at an auction and put in the new house this feb just to get by. I moved it to the garage (after the 1st stove switch) and just noticed it still has coals after 24 hrs. Even after the second change of stoves, the one out of my old cabin/ new feed & tack room putting stove bricks in, adding a fan in the chimney and using green wood it's hard to light then won't shut down. They are Logwood stoves if anyone knows anything about them or another not expensive cook stove it'd be appreciated.

Before I even started my rant I'm going to apologize.. I try and keep family out of my posts as much as I can accept for the good stuff. Well today is not such a good day for my 7 year old son and I. He came home from school in a ugly mood. Had a tantrum about having to do homework. Then after all that was fixed he mouthed off. Yes I'm the mom who punishes. He got flicked in the lips, not hard mind you, there wasn't even a sound. His response was to hit me in my stomach!!@ So sadly for him his rear is grounded until I'm not sure when, his 18th birthday maybe? Sadly this is behavior he is picking up from his 2 older brothers (13&15) who the police won't do a thing about and neither will the mental health center. So what now? Someone in here has to have dealt with a confused misguided child. Please give me some advice. Yes I know it's illegal to beat a child and no abuse comes to my children but for the love of God I'm tired of getting hit and kicked.

PLEASEHELP..

Are you a single Mom? Have you spoken with their father? This should be his area of respinsibility teaching respect to women. If not, they need a male mentor. Does your local police or military recruiters office have cadet programs? Maybe a church pastor? A male authority needs to handle this.

Stay strong Momma.

thank you. His father scared the geepers out of him. He thinks football is a thing of the past and that is his favorite thing.

Going to try to build another rabbit hutch this weekend or the next, hopefully it will go quick, as I have a girl who needs a hutch for her two bunnies. Wish me luck folks, I plan on doing this as cheap as possible so I will be using pallets. Going to try to get the van cleaned out tomorrow so I can load up on some pallets then take them to my dad's house to get them torn apart. going to go out and buy the wire tomorrow and get some nails and hopefully that will be the only thing i have to buy for the hutches. Need one hutch for doe, one for her rabbits and one for the babies. lots of building going on these next two weekends.

Good luck getting nails into pallet wood.

You might want to try wood screws instead. Depending on the wire you are using, you may also want to get some wire staples/steeples as well, though they will be equally as hard to drive into pallet wood.
