Homesteaders

If you were near me I'd give you one od my boys! Best roosters ever, they do the same thing that @MistyMountain s rooster did!
Would love to take you up on that offer. What breed are they if you don't mind my asking. Mine is a Silver Pencil Rock. My fiercest rooster is my old Silkie who has survived an owl, a hawk, a neighbor's dog, a coyote and a fox. Not to mention a possum, he is still rules his roost at over 9 years old. He has now earned extra security with a top over his head.

The dad of them all is a purebred Chantecler. The next oldest is 1/2 Silver laced Wyandotte and 1/2 Chantecler the rest are jumbled but the Chantecler is their dad

Nice.....  I looked at the breed at one time and wondered how they would do down here in the deep south.  Their history is interesting.

Mine did good when we hit 113 this year. They are absolutley wonderful though, the one hen has hatched 50+ chicks for me in the last 3 years. And some previous ones I've had layed an egg almost everyday

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this or not, but I kind of think it is.
I'm wanting to try something.
When I first moved out I realized that I could pretty easily keep my grocery bill around $100 a month, then I moved back home for a couple weeks because my well quit, and now I'm getting ready to move back to my house.
I want to try and keep my grocery bill at $100 or less a month, not a dollar over, BUT I also want to start eating healthy.
I feel like it'll be a lot easier next year becuase I'll be storing a lot from my garden (which I'm expanding this year) and my cow will be about ready to start milking. But this year it'll be kind of tough.
So does anybody have any good ideas on what I could add to my grocery list?
I'm pretty notoriously picky, I hate rice and beans. And I love smoothies and fruit lol.
So those of you who are good at staying healthy and natural on a budget, would you please share some of your secrets?
It's just me that I'm feeding

Lol! When I moved out on my own I ate cheap, ramen noodles were 10 for a dollar, hamburg was .99cents a pound and Milwaukee's Best beer, $3.99 12pk... :-D
Seriously though, cabbage, red and green super good for you, each has different benefits on vitamins. Cooked or raw, many ways to incorporate it in recipes. Lasts forever in a fridge. And is super cheap sometimes. Around St Patrick's day super cheap.
Around Christmas and Thanksgiving keep a eye out on turkey deals, super cheap. We buy a few just to grind up for turkey burger.

Who is starting seedlings? Has anyone ordered seeds?

I'm not ordering seeds this year but wanting to start spinach today maybe in pots and the garden if I get it tilled today. Everything else I'm growing can wait. Or I'd have to keep transplanting into larger pots.
I live In the south though. Well NE Oklahoma. another couple of weeks below freezing is all were going to get. With the occasional cold front. It did hit 70 Tue and everyday for 2 wks after is bellow 32 for the low

I'm pretty sure it's possible to keep th grocery Bill under $100 for 5 of us in my house we keep it pretty low. But we have a milk cow, chickens, and our own meat. And in the summer we grade our goods for garden produce

Yeah next year I should be milking my cow, which means I'll have milk products and meat, as well as eggs from my chickens and stuff from my garden. Next year will be a lot easier than this year
