honking chickens

We're on hen #4 now that started a croupy, honking noise. After a couple of days, I noticed a clear nasal discharge and bubbles in the corner of the eyes of the first one to exhibit symptoms. Called my vet and looked online here and it sounded like an upper respiratory infection. Not sure where this is coming from. It's been three of our year old hens and one four month old. A couple of days on doxycycline and they seem back to normal. Any ideas other than an URI? Sound familiar to anyone? Hot and humid here in NW Fla., like other areas of the Southeast. Could the weather have anything to do with it?

You should start that as it's own thread- you will get more responses that way.

Hi. I have a Rhode Island Red that honks with breathing on and off. She seems otherwise fine. What do I treat her with? No runny nose, she’s eatung and drinking fine.
Hi @Shelbel74 :frow Welcome To BYC
Can you upload a video of her honking and breathing to youtube, then provide us a link?
How old is she?
Does the noise you hear correlate with any activity like eating/drinking?

It's hard to know from your description if she is sick or not. Unless you see more symptoms or she is lethargic, then it would be better to monitor her for a few days then treat unnecessarily.

Hi. She’s 8 months old. She does this honking on and off. Sometimes it’s weeks in between. Sometimes it's when she’s eating other times she’s waiting to go to bed. It’s odd. I looked her over and see nothing. I have not heard it in the last few days. I’m wondering if chickens can have allergies or asthma.

Hearing her would be good:)

Chickens can have respiratory illnesses. There could be something that is irritating her - feed in the nostrils or stuck in the throat, blocked nostrils or mold is always a possibility.
