Hi! I've been wavering back and forth for about 5 years on getting chickens. We live in Pittsburgh, PA and our ordinances do allow them, but I worry about neighbors still complaining. We also travel a lot, but I do have my sister that has offered to help with them while we are away (usually about 6 - 8 weeks a year).

So, heres my intro questions....

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I do not have any yet, I'm still planning my coop and have applied for my chicken permit!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

None. :( Hoping to have 4 - 6 within the next 2 months!

(3) What breeds do you have?

I know I want at least 2 silkies. I'm undecided on the others.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Well, I think they're cute...for starters. But, the benefits...ticks are a big problem here, and I don't like using chemicals to treat my yard. Plus, who wouldn't want fresh eggs???

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Photography, scrapbooking & general crafting, camping, hiking, boating, fishing, traveling (Disney World junkie) and just being a mom!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I am a 39 year old woman, married to my high school sweetheart. We live in Pittsburgh, PA and have 1 daughter, she is 14 going on 24...as they all are. We have 3 dogs (yorkie and 2 yorkie poos) and 3 cats that are strictly indoor rescue snobs. We also have 1 crazy hamster that probably thinks she rules the world. I'm a travel agent & photographer...but I work from home to be here for my family when they need me.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I googled! I have been gathering information about keeping chickens for a few years now, and I've finally decided it is time!! So, I need to chat with my fellow chickeners. Yeah, I know thats not a real word. Just let me live, okay??? lol

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Make sure you do research on proper coop and run design for Silkie keeping in the north regarding space and ventilation requirements before you get any birds.
