Hi everyone! I'm Ash and I am brand new (obviously) and i am one of the newly smitten. Here is my question. The man I work with says that he keeps golden pheasants and fantail pigeons in with his chickens. He has a 8'x12x house for them (he locks everyone in their own cages at night) and an outside avairy that is 12' x 20'. (With perches and little trees) All of the birds are beautiful. He has two black and two white Silkies, 3 white fantail pigeons and three white and black fantail pigeons, 2 of the brown(ish) Amaracaunas and two golden pheasant males and 4 females(it was 5). All of the colors contrast with each other and when I saw it... thats when i fell in love. I fell hard.

Is it possible/acceptable to keeps all of these breeds together if I build something in that size range? (He said he had to remove one of the golden pheasant hens because of aggression and after that they seem fine)

Thanks for all of your help. Everyone here seems to really know what they are talking about, and I would really hate to set myself up for disaster before I start.

Thanks again!!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Silkies are fairly docile and usually don't see all that great because of their head fluff. You can mix bird species if they are all docile and tolerate each other well, but you need plenty of space to avoid crowding and subsequent problems.

Hi 1muttsfan! Thanks for the quick response!

Would it be best to start them all out as chicks together? That way no one has to be the "new guy" alone? Or maybe leave out a breed?

I agree with the above advice. I also think raising them together would help. Then they'll be used to each other by the time they're grown.

X 2 The breeds mentioned for the most part are mellow. Be prepared to remove any trouble makers. Welcome to BYC.
