Good morning!
My name is Amanda and I am hoping to start keeping some chickens relatively soon... I may hold off until the Spring since I am so new to this! I am a registered nurse and work with oncology patients. I got my oldest daughter involved in 4H last year and she showed a Polish Hen during our local county fair and in the process fell in love with chickens. Previously, she had wanted a pet cockatiel or parakeet, now she can't stop talking about getting chickens, she absolutely loves them and I'm looking forward to make her dreams come true... and honestly mine as well! I am just trying to make sure I understand as much as possible before I embark on this endeavor. We currently own a 14 year old Golden retriever and we're a household of almost completely females! We have a 7 year old, 4 year old and 2 year old! Looking forward to this adventure, thanks you for letting me join!

Hi Amanada, it's nice to have you here! I think holding off until spring sounds like a good idea...that will give you time to figure out what breed of chickens you want (mixed flocks are nice), build a coop, learn the fundamentals, etc.

Make yourself at home here and always feel free to ask questions.

Thanks for joining us!

Hello Amanda and welcome aboard!

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Hello Amanda, and welcome! sourland offered some pretty sound advice. Attend a few shows. Decide on the breed you want. Get the best stock you can, from a breeder with winning stock. Prior to getting your stock, you will need to set up a predator-proof coop, and run for them to live in. It may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but it's really not too bad. It won't be long before your off, and running, enjoying your flock, and winning at shows.

:frow Welcome!
That's great to have your daughter so interested! You can share in taking care of them.
We had so much fun looking up different breeds online & at the library. We picked ours based on friendly temperment, eggs, & climate & stuck with heritage breeds.
I'd recommend reading some of the posts on the emergency/illness section so you can also be prepared for what to look out for in healthy & sick birds, and have some idea of treatments. Hope you won't ever need it but it's definitely better than scrambling around for n a weekend evening not knowing if there's anyone open who sells Corid or Bluekote.

Glad to have you & people here have been tremendously helpful & kind!
