The only thing a rooster is good for is egg fertilization. If you want to hatch your own eggs (or sell hatching eggs) raise a rooster from hatching age and handle him often. If he ever gets aggressive, grab him by the legs and flip him upside down.
My rooster is super docile, and has never attacked... however for a first flock I would not suggest one, especially if you have kids under the age of 5, even 10...
