Horizon's End: A Wolf Story based on RWTP

Chapter 17

Ebony and his group sprinted through the forest, with Cedar bringing up the front as she led them to Stonepack’s densite. Her mind kept flashing back to images of Aki; the harder she tried to block them out, the worse they got.

Cedar, stop it. This was what you were supposed to do from the beginning. You should never have fallen in love with him.

Cedar felt herself going numb to all emotion. The sweet, kind wolf that Stonepack had known her as, and that she had grown into, was breaking away bit by bit… and replacing it was a mere shell. She could almost feel her gaze grow cold, and her heart colder. It was the way she had been before she’d joined Stonepack… before she’d met Aki. That’s it, Cedar. This is the way it was supposed to be, all along.

Ebony plunged down the hill as the clearing opened up before them, and skidded into Stonepack’s densite. Cedar felt adrenaline begin to seep into her veins as the excitement for the anticipation of the battle began to rise within her packmates.

Mari whirled around when she heard the sounds of thrumming paw steps, and when the rank stench of Darkpack seeped into the air. Her muzzle twisted into a vicious snarl. “Get out of my territory, you fur brained mutts!” she roared.

“Make us,” Ebony snorted.

“How’s this?” Mari roared, and began to charge across the densite. She lunged for Ebony, and he did the same; their jaws snapped wildly as they clashed in mid-air. Vicious snarls split the air as Mari tore at the side of his neck, and Ebony snapped his jaws at her leg.

Senkah was waiting on the stop of the alpha’s rock as this happened. As she heard the snarls split the air between Ebony and Mari, she narrowed her eyes to dangerous blue slits. “STONEPACK! Darkpack is here! ATTACK!” she howled. Right after she warned her pack of the attack, she leaped off of the rock and landed with the grace of a feather on the ground. She charged off to meet the Darkpack wolves with Hades by her side.

Since they’d had fair warning, courtesy of Aki, the pack was prepared. The clearing sprang to life as though a magical spell had been cast upon it; Quartz wheeled around when she heard Senkah’s battle cry, and stood beside Nebrivo so that she could fight beside him, while Sierra let out a throat-ripping snarl as she lunged for West. Zero slammed into Nighta in a flurry of snapping jaws, and Nike was sizing up Tawny as she charged into the densite.

Thunder sprinted over to the battling wolves with Rain flanking him, and he managed to throw Ebony off of Mari. “Go help Aki! He’s fighting Atra!” he howled to her over the deafening roar of battle. Mari nodded, and disappeared amongst the fighting wolves as her silver form sprinted away.

Faedon came out of her den and her gaze flew around the densite wildly. Cedar’s face was cut from ice, and when she saw that Faedon didn’t have an opponent, she smirked. Seizing her chance, she surged across the densite, and launched herself at Faedon’s red and white form in an attempt to blindside her. Faedon was taken completely off guard; she fell on the ground with a yelp, and when her pine green eyes landed upon Cedar, she stared up at her in confusion. “Cedar?” Disbelief and confusion clouded her usually alert green gaze.

“Ha! Fool.” Cedar’s muzzle was contorted in a sneer. I don’t care who you are; if you’re that gullible, you won’t live long. It’s just the law of the taiga. Faedon’s expression shifted from confusion to fury quicker than Cedar had imagined it could, and Faedon surged to her paws. Her muzzle twisted in a furious snarl, and she slammed her paws into Cedar’s chest with the strength of a bear, sending them both rolling.

Faedon snapped her jaws at Cedar’s face, and Cedar yelped as a slash was torn open just above her eye. While Faedon was swifter than Cedar was, she struggled to push her off of her, as the Darkpack spy was heavier than she was. Cedar snarled as she diverted her attention away from the pain and back to Faedon, and slashed with her fangs at her face. Faedon flew back with a yelp, and stumbled onto her back, exposing her belly to Cedar and leaving her open to attack. A dark smirk curled the corners of Cedar’s mouth upwards when she saw her chance, and she was about to plunge, when… she faltered.

…What am I doing?

Cedar didn’t know how to answer that question. What was she doing? Taking her best friend’s life away?

Faedon is my friend… No, she’s NOT! She’s from Stonepack! But… Aki is from Stonepack…

Cedar had waited too long. Her hesitance gave Faedon plenty of time to roll back to her paws, and before Cedar had time to react, Faedon had bowled her over. She struggled to her paws and wheeled back around to see that Faedon was about to lunge for her again; she leaped forward and slammed Faedon back into the ground, and Faedon slashed Cedar’s cheek open with her fangs. Cedar grimaced, but it shifted into a snarl in a matter of seconds; she took Faedon by her leg and swung her at Aki’s den, which was conveniently only a few meters away.

Cedar sank to the ground as she stalked towards Faedon; she attempted to back her inside Aki’s den while snapping at her throat, but Faedon anticipated the move and leaped aside. A second later, Faedon lunged for Cedar in a flurry of snapping jaws, going in for the left. Cedar saw her shift her weight, and figured that she was using a feint attack, but much to her surprise she stayed left. She clenched her jaws down on Cedar’s shoulder and sank her fangs right down to the bone, and Cedar howled as beams of pain seemed to shoot right into her shoulder.

A gray and white blur came surging from between the hordes of fighting wolves, and crashed right into Faedon’s form. “Hello, cousin,” Akira hissed as she snapped her jaws at Faedon’s ears.

Searing pain still pulsed from Cedar’s shoulder, but she was more than relieved that Akira had knocked Faedon away from her. A deep growl rumbled in Cedar’s throat, I’ll make you feel pain ten times worse than this for doing this to my shoulder, Faedon. She bunched her legs and was prepared to lunge, when Rain leaped in front of her.

“Hey, fur brain,” Rain hissed.

“You’re all just a bunch of idiotic ducks!” Cedar growled.

“This is coming from a traitor?” Rain spat, and a second later, she launched herself at Cedar. She leaped aside and dodged the attack, but she stumbled and she toppled into the side of the den with a yelp. Indignation burned Cedar’s pelt, and she rushed at Rain a second later, snapping her jaws at her throat; Rain tried to leap away, but Cedar’s fangs slashed open her shoulder, and Rain yelped. In retaliation, she growled and dove for Cedar’s leg; she tried to step back, but Rain’s jaws clenched down on the joint, making it buckle beneath her. She snarled and tore her fangs at the base of Rain’s throat; Rain was flipped over, and Cedar latched her jaws down onto her scruff. Cedar released her hold and tried to leap over Rain; her only goal was to rejoin the fight outside, where she could use her greater size as an advantage against her enemies.

“Oh no you don’t!” Rain howled; she clamped her jaws down on Cedar’s tail and yanked back hard. Pain pulsed from her tail and Cedar yelped as she stumbled back. She tried to spin around to face Rain, but just as she did that, Nighta’s huge body barreled in through the mouth of the den. Before Cedar could react, she felt herself getting shoved in front of Rain; she realized that Rain was trying to use her as a shield, and fury burned within Cedar’s pelt. She yelped as Nighta crashed into her and bruised her ribs, and Rain flung her aside.

Stars danced in a circle around Cedar’s head, but she found herself outside of the den; despite the fact that her head was whirling, she surged to her paws and raced away without so much as a glance back at the den. By the sounds of the yelps rising from the den, Cedar could tell that Rain was losing horribly. Serves her right, Cedar thought with a growl.

Cedar grunted as she stumbled when a wolf crashed into her. She looked up to see who it was, and she narrowed her eyes to slits. “Oh, not you again!” she growled upon seeing that it was none other than Faedon. She slashed her fangs at Cedar’s neck and leaped away nimbly; with fury rumbling in her chest, Faedon snarled and snapped back at Cedar’s muzzle, slashing open three very painful cuts. Cedar lunged for Faedon’s throat, but her fangs only sank into the thick fur around Faedon’s chest. She growled and twisted away, and snapped at her muzzle once again.

Cedar yelped and stumbled back as Faedon slashed open another cut on her muzzle. Faedon was much faster than Cedar, and she gave her no time to recover; she raised her paw and gave her a hard kick, landing right on the side of Cedar’s neck. She was thrown aside, but she roared as she heaved herself back to her paws and slammed right back into Faedon. They were sent rolling, before breaking apart with furious snarls twisting their muzzles.

But then… a voice split the air like a knife, and rang out above the roar of the battle. Cedar felt her heart stop cold.

“CEDAR! You traitorous mutt!”

Aki…!
