Horrible day, I just want to give up sometimes

All these kids have just shown their true maturity level including the ones in the hall fighting.

I know you are an awesome person, so there's no way that awesomeness doesn't rub off into your talent as a teacher.
Don't beat yourself up!

What grade is this????? Others may know but for those of us who do not, that is important info in this case.

Middle of the road is most likely the truth, he pulled her hair or whatever earlier and she was letting him have it. I would not judge on distant behavior but what has happened recently.

Detention for both, good idea.

Blame yourself? No way, you were giving these kids an opportunity to demonstrate their responsibility and they blew it. Cut yourself some slack, you are human and you should be able to leave a few of your GT students alone and expect them to behave.

Of course all of this depends on what grade we are talking about here....... 9th graders know better; under that, well it depends on the kids...... of course anyone under 6th grade I would expect this kind of behavior....

It happens. You were going above and beyond to help those students on your time to write an essay that would benefit them in the future. If they want to destroy that there it little that you can do to stop them from doing so. In the end, it is their choice what actions they choose. They will look back on this day in the future and think how stupid they acted.

If either of them were my kid, I'd be punishing them for misbehaving and causing problems for the teacher. My DH taught high school and I was a bookkeeper in an elementary so I've seen and heard of kids misbehaving. No way was any of this your fault; don't even think that. And they may be smart kids and GT and all that, but they all push the envelope occasionally. I have two of my own, grown and gone now, thank goodness. I look back on what they put me through (yes, they were bright GT students also) and wonder why anyone decides to have children. Only one perfect child has ever been born and he's no longer with us. You shouldn't get into trouble for this if your administrators have any brains. And as far as charging the girl with assault, that's ridiculous. They all know they acted stupid and the sooner the parents let go of it the better off they'll all be. I'm with those who say punish them both. Takes two to have a disagreement. Be good to yourself. You are in an honorable, but often thankless, profession!

Students are why we teach and love our jobs.
Students are also why we often want to beat our heads bloody against the wall.

Studies show that teenagers' brains aren't completely wired yet. I hold to that truth when they do stupid things. Apparently their brains do finish up eventually and theoretically will work appropriately one day.

Sorry, but if your parents hadn't "bred" you wouldn't be here. I hope you were kidding!
