Horribly, and I mean HORRIBLY deformed duckling

I'm so sorry for your loss. What you did was definitely the humane thing to do rather than let him suffer. This leads me to a question that I hadn't thought of but is one that is very important, I think. If something like this did happen or one of my duck/lings was horribly injured, etc, what is the humane way to euthanize the little guy? I hope this wouldn't happen, of course, but it's better to be prepared than to be trying to find this information while I'm upset and emotional. Thank you everyone. I know this is a less-than-pleasant topic of discussion.
