Horse people..What do you use?...when riding?....

Hello Chaty Chick....we also have an Arab mare and we ride western ...with your horse what do you use under the saddle? Navaho and saddle pad ?....thanks

I use a Orthopedic pad and its shorter and has a round edge to it. Its a Pro Choice and its for Barrel racers and its shorter than a normal pad as she has a shorter back. Others almost hang off her tail.

I hear you Chatty chick .....we have tried sooo many saddle pads because she has such a short back...most of them look like she has wings coming from her hips!!once the saddles on... hahaha!I have been told about the barrel pads ....my daughter has been hesitant because the skirt on her saddle is square....do you use a navaho(sp) under the saddle pad....? thanks for all you help everyone....very much appreciated...

I use a thin balnket but most the time I just use the pad. I also have a light barrel saddle that I use also and its skirt is round also. Works well for mine, and its easy for me to lift also.

With western you generally want a thicker pad than with english. The saddle does not always fit as closely and they usually have more weight. It will depend what your doing. For barrels I run a very light cloth pad under my extremely light rounded skirt saddle. For pleasure we always used a medium pad ~3/4-1" thick of a sturdy foam or neoprene type material (but more absorbent) with a show blanket over it. For long trail riding or working ranch horses we use very thick pads with wool bottoms, stuffed with synthetic material, and a sturdy tight weave practically waterproof nylon/cotton blend top. The longer your riding, the more weight, and the more shifts in weight your doing the thicker you'll want your pad.

For a thin square skirted pad look for these plain felt/fleece/polyester (polyester is technically the name for fake fleece) pads. Weaver makes one and sells at farm and fleet if your in the midwest. They are cheap and can be cut to shape. Then throw a show blanket or other sturdier blanket over them to protect them and look better. I used them on my sister's barrel mare that had an odd back and didn't fit most standard blanket or saddle shapes and sizes. Only downside is they wear rather quick and if you don't use something to cover them they get all fuzzy and pick up various materials while trail riding. I usually had to replace it every 6-12months.

on one of my horses (Appendix), he is hard to fit the saddle so I use a device called CorrecTOR, Neat item, I went through several saddles and just could not afford a custom made so I got the best fit and still had problems. A trainer friend recommended the CorrecTOR, brought her's over and showed me the difference, I was impressed. great item.

I use a thick wool pad and cover with a Blanket to match my outfit when Showing. If I am just riding or training I just use my wool pad. I am saving up for a 5Star (we sell them here at work).
