The saddle I use came with my horse, it was custom made for him, so I do not think that would be the problem. I always make sure the saddle pad is just right so it does not pinch the shoulder and I do tend to cinch a little too tight but I then fix when I am about to mount. I think age is just getting to him even if I am just trail riding.

Just because it was custom fit at one time, does not mean it will ALWAYS fit. It might well need to be re-fitted. Padding/flocking in English saddles can shift or compact, and both "custom built" English and Western saddles can become poorly fitting due to muscle and fat changes in the horses back.

X2 I can almost guarantee that a saddle fitted to out older mare 10 years ago wouldn't fit now

As they get older they get sway backed, sometimes fatter or sometimes skinier depends on the horse. Some horses stay literally the same though

Anybody want to guess how she did this??!

(please excuse the goopiness; that's the antibiotic ointment that I put on the marks)

Well, BB2K and I have snooped all over the fence and barn, and we haven't found any short red hairs sticking to anything, but our guess is that she ran into an outside corner. Now, whether she did it on her own, or whether Humpty Dumpty was pushed, we don't know. Once again, proof that "if there's a way a horse can hurt itself, it will find it:" I reckon I should be glad it is no worse than it is.

Only scratches. Probably ran into the corner of something like you said
