Yeah, the park rangers drive up and down the roads and beaches. We saw a lot of them patrolling and I would imagine there are more when there are dozens if not hundreds of people camping in the summertime.

That makes sense! That's good they enforce it. It gets them killed otherwise.

Now they have signs and fliers everywhere saying to stay a bus length away from ponies, with dire warnings that they could basically attack and maim you for no reason at any moment, and you can be fined. It's all a bit of overkill, but I guess it's effective to keep people who don't know anything about horse behavior away from them, and to keep the ponies from begging for food in the campgrounds.

Back in the 1970s, these rules were not in place, and I managed to live through camping there every year:

Yeah, but, in the 70's people had a bit more common sense and weren't as lawsuit happy as they are now. I have seen several videos of people being kicked or bitten by what appears to be wild ponies on the beach when the pony was CLEARLY not happy about the situation and the person walked right behind the already upset horse. Enough lawsuits and they would have to close the island or pen the horses up in certain areas. At least now with the signs everywhere, if someone gets hurt by a pony, they can say "well, couldn't have happened if you were a bus length away, now could it?" and slap them with a $100 fine to add insult to injury. I wish I could get close to the ponies, but, I understand that in the long run, it is better for them if they don't associate people with food or attention, and also, I imagine that it could get dangerous for people if the ponies think the people have food because then the ponies could fight with each other over the "food" and the person could get hurt since they are caught in the middle.

Exactly. We all know how pushy a horse that ( theoretically) has been trained to respect people can get; can you imagine how dangerous one that hasn't had that training could be? Especially for people who don't speak horse!

I don't mean to change the topic but....Anyone have opinions on feeding horses cow hay? The hay that we bought isn't moldy but I don't know how green it's supposed to be....? It has hardly any green. I'm not really sure how much color matters.

If they're working regularly it might be a good idea to get them a supplement of some kind, but as long as it isn't moldy then they should be good.

The hay I feed mine is cow quality. There are likely more weeds, therefore will be more wasted hay on the ground. The green doesn't really matter, there is technically less nutrition in the brown stuff, but if they aren't working super hard or have special nutrition needs, you are probably fine.
