Barefoot unless they are in work.

What do you mean by work? Just curious. Like riding ?

All depends. My welsh never had shoes but he never left the field. He did work pulling a small wagon. Now my riding horse I kept shoes on because I would ride him on gravel and paved roads from time to time.

Anything more than just a ride around the pasture. Trail riding, jousting, showing, etc.

The entire Swedish show jumping team competed their horses barefoot at the Tokyo Olympics this year. It was quite a big deal.
