Horse's Weight *pic*

He looks fine. He is better off than the many overweight horses you see.

BTW I have found that the Purina weight tape shows horses heavier than my Farnam weight tape and my vet's livestock scale. It usually shows them about 100 pounds heavier. I think they do that because they tell you to feed by weight. That way you give them more of their feed. I never trust the Purina weight tape.

Thanks for the comments. I have been a bit of a "worry wart" since bringing him home that he would drop weight and me not really catch it.

Pat - I totally admit that he is not being worked like he should for muscles. I need that slap in the head to get out and start working him again. Now, if the rain will coorperate :-) and not give me the excuse not to do it.

OK - I will stop picking him apart and get to some work on exercise.

Thanks Again!

Very interesting about the weight tapes! I will have to check mine. It is actually the first tape I bought when he was 6 months old. It has all of his "growing weights" on it with the date!

Just to make sure it didn't come out wrong, please understand I am totally not *criticizing* his muscling at all, just saying that if you're dissatisfied with his topline then it's more muscling you want, not more weight.

Honestly on a downhill-built horse with smallish feet I'd try to keep him at about the weight you've got him at, not try to fatten him up any (though additional *muscle* mass is perfectly fine)

Have fun,

Pat

That seems to be all you need to do, work him a bit and he should fill out nicely for you. He's practically a clone for my Missouri Fox Trotter, same weight and muscle tone. I work him for a while and he fills out beautifully! Good luck-no more excuses! lol

I think he looks fine! I also wondered why he was getting a senior feed at his age.
