Hose end shut off valve instead of pressure regulator?

We just installed our chicken watering system with chicken nipples, a pipe, a hose and a hose end shut off valve. We couldn't find a pressure regulator at the store so we decided to try out the hose end shut off valve. It seems to work, but I'll be checking it throughout the day. I can post photos later.
