I was so excited to see hosta popping up next to the barn. Now the chickens seem to think it is a tasty salad. Will it hurt them?

Ours have been chomping hostas for three years and no harm has come to them.

Oh my gosh, our hostas are a nibbled mess. On the bright side, the chickens are keeping them from growing out over the front walk!

Hostas must really taste good, because so many chickens eat them! Ours got eaten pretty badly one year, but came back up the next year. By then the chickens had discovered the chard, so they gave up on the hostas. So far, planting more leafy greens just for the chickens seems to be diverting their attention. Sometimes, grass and legumes just aren't enough for the little gourmands...

About the only way I know of to get rid of a hosta is to let the chickens at it. I have tried digging hostas out for years because I have way too many, but every year they grew back no matter how deep I dug. Then I built the chicken run over several that I was trying to get rid of, the Girls did a fine jog of making sure they didn't grow back. They love it and it wont hurt them.

OMG I can't believe ya'll let chickens eat Hostas

(jk) I buy Hostas to plant all the time.. My dogs let them stay about one summer and then poof they are gone.. I love Hostas..

Funny. Hostas are the one plant in my yard that I haven't managed to kill. In fact, they grew so much I had to divide them and find places to put all their offspring. The chickens do love them, but so far haven't killed them!

yeah, I have 6 variagated hosta next to my driveway and all I got to see of them last year was nubs. I am putting up poultry fence as soon as it comes in, try to save my plants this year... that and they eat my day lilies greens (only when they are just starting)

Guess we sould start growing them as spring chicken greens - that is if the deer don't get them first.
