My chicks are only 16 1/2 weeks and yesterday was a rare 100 degree day here in Michigan. They panted all day then, wouldn't ya know it, this morning I find the first egg! I'm pretty sure it was from our sex link "Golden Buff" (From Meyer Hatchery).

It seems pretty early for a first one, from what I've read...what are the chances that

a) the heat caused it
b) I should be concerned about anything
c) it will actually continue now

As a followup, should I switch them all to layer ration now (they're on grower) or should I just supplement with oyster shells?

Any thoughts? Exciting day!

It was probably just time for that pullet to start, and yes, I'd give calcium in some form. They will be fine on either grower or layer, but either way, I offer oyster shell on the side.

Thanks! I got the "all OK" from Meyer Hatchery this morning (via facebook) as well...they say the Golden Buffs lay really early, so I guess I'm good to go.

So its OK to give oyster shells until I run out of my bag of grower (probably another 3 weeks) then switch to layer?

Yes, Just put the shell in a seperate bowl they will eat some if they need it. Glad your getting eggs.
