House chicken with new chick

Your new chick is a Guinea. And your Welsummer is actually a Black Sexlink or possibly a mixed breed. The new chick needs to be in and apx 90F degrees brooder for the first couple weeks. @007Sean is absolutely right, it needs to be on a high protein chick or game birds starter.

Hello Sean and Gray
Thanks so much for the advice.. im attaching more pics of Guinea, have to say i do love my housechicken which i now at least know the correct breed of thank you.
And little guine
There are no signs of feathers at all so far, no pins or nothing.. chick must be 6 or more days old now. Any info like expected feathers?
Would anyone know if my chicken and the Guinea can go to the same roost 2 separate boxes but in one large dog house outside im building? Will they get along?

Thanks so much for all the expert advice and tentative replies.

Linda

Oh my what is a guinea chick it is a wild area it was found in. It seems to be fine now healthy, eating but still not ome feather or feather qill starting, what wpuld your expert advice be please.

Thanks so much Linda
Glad to hear s/he is doing well! That's great news!
Isn't she cute!

I don't know much about Guinea fowl, I've never had them.
From what @Gray Farms and @007Sean said, she would need a little more protein than what a chicken chick usually needs. Not sure what percentage? Hopefully they can clarify.

I'm sure you can find information here on BYC about Guineas and of course on the internet too. Plenty of folks raise them. Below is a link to the BYC Guinea forum and also a link to what they look like.

Oh, stop it...... chicken feed is fine if that's all she has on hand! Stop making the lady run around unnecessarily, she's got enough on her hands as is!

What are you feeding the guinea? What is your brooder set up and temperature? Guineas can't be sexed until they are 6 to 8 months old.

I think i killed her😭😭😭😭

She got into my chickens mealworms last night ate like 7 or 8 before i saw,,,,

This morning she was dead..

Could the mealworms have killed the poor baby.

As a wild animal i had actually not thought about anything killing her besides illness.. as they are quite neglecting perents Guineas.

Anyway if it was the worms then at least i now know..

Any advice on the subject would be great.

Many thanks
Linda

Hello all

I have a 6 month old house trained wellsummer chicken , she was found on a busy rd, i have today been given a rescue chick also found at a office park abandoned, will my bigger hen hurt the baby chick? Im hoping to move them both to the garden to the coop i have built for them.

Any advice would be great. I love my chicken she is the best wild pet iv had so far🤣

Many thanks
Linda
Normally they won't, especially when they are the ones who hatched it. As a matter of fact, I've never seen a hen hurt a chick... I never did.

Linda, so sad to hear the chick passed. Not likely it was the mealworms. I would have responded sooner but I too have been under the weather 🤒. As @Gray Farms
mentioned, if the temperature in the brooder was too low it could have been the culprit.

Knowing what we know now, I would say that the chick was 1 day old when found. If you find yourself in this situation again, then a brooder with a heat source to provide 95°F to 90°F temp at the brooder floor will be needed for the 1st week, also a "cool" end of the brooder should be provide so the chick can move from the heated area to a lower temp area if it needs too!, the temperature can be lowered each week until the ambient temperature is 70°F or the chick is fully feathered, newly hatched chicks can not regulate their internal temperature until they have enough feathers to control temperature. Young chicks can easily become chilled and die.

Also, a high protein feed of at least 24% should be fed to young gamebird chicks.
Sorry about your loss! :hugs
