House Plant Enthusiasts Unite!

Most of my tropicals were decimated by our unusually frigid winter weather. I move them every winter into the hot tub room and depend on a small heater and a heat lamp as well as window sunshine to carry them thru the winter.
I lost my Bird of Paridise that I started from seed 19 years ago as well all the ivies, the Spider plants, the asparagus fern, Sansevieria, the Norfolk pine, schelerra, kolanchoe, the pineapples, hibiscus, Begonias, many cactus, and unusual plants that I got from my dad’s yard in Florida.
A few of the Aloe Vera pups and sections of the Christmas cactus were still fleshy so I’m trying to root them.
I will start replacements from seed and cuttings. And will begin purchasing a few at a time.
The orchids were in the house and did well.

I just received a small orange and two Meyer Lemon trees from Stark Nursery. They will be potted plants to spend warm weather outside and moved inside for cold weather.

Oh no that is so unfortunate! are all those plants east to find in your areas at least?

Yes, thank you. I can either find the plants locally or order seed from specialty suppliers or start from seeds I have on hand.
Starting my plant collection over wasn’t my plan at my age, but hey nothing like living on a farm and being retired.
I started the pineapples from the tops of ones we bought at the grocery store...so that is doable. I have a few young trees from avocado and Mango seed too.
Cuttings are good ways to start new plants. I have friends who will share.
I’m an avid seed collector too.

That’s good to hear. I do a lot of propagation either from my own plants or from others in order to have my own.

ive only tried to start tropical plants from seed one time (BOP Reginae) & it failed. I may try again in the future.

I had good luck starting some tropicals in a terrarium. I have started cactus and tiny succulents in moist sand. The seed can be microscopic!
