I just got back from a week away. For some inexplicable reason, my housesitter neglected to fill up the smaller feeders. Three of the five pens were without food for some time (I don't know how long and am purely guessing based on behavior). The older chickens were hungry and rushed the food I put out, but they seem fine. The adolescents are the problem.

When I got in this morning I noticed something weird with the open top hanging feeder. When I got closer I realized that five of the half grown babies had crammed themselves in there. I immediately started pulling out limp bodies. The girl on the bottom was dead. The rest staggered around once I got them free. It looked like they had jumped in trying to get to the food that had gotten wet in all the rain and had stuck inside the hanging feeder. There was no other food in the either feeder. The adult chickens in there were hungry, but okay. All 17 of the babies looked horrible. I quickly put food out and most of them dove on it. The smushed five don't look good. All 17 look thin and scraggedly. I brought the worst three in the house and promptly started feeding them crumble mash, water, grapes (for sugar) and scrambled egg (for protein). Once I got those three going I brought grapes and scrambled egg out to the outside lot. I don't know what else to do. The inside three look a little better this afternoon, but all three inside girls are just standing in the cage with their feathers all fluffed out and their eyes closed. Every now and then they will eat some food or scratch around. Mostly they just stand there all fluffed out. The outside lot are kind of doing the same thing. When I left they were zipping about acting like normal half grown babies. They just don't look or act right now.

What else can I do to help?

WOW what a shame, I think you are going everything you can.......its one of thoes time will tell things. They are probably shocky so thats why they are standing still. I think in the morning you will either have perkier chicks or not.

I had one of my chickens start laying for the first time while I was away for 4 days at my days memorial. DH stayed home and was watching my birds. This one little girl must have been confused because she hunkered down in the coop and didnt come out to eat or drink for about 2 days. DH didnt notice anything wrong. She was clearly weak and dehydrated. I gave her oats/apple sauce/ and electrolite vitamin pwowder mixed together for about a day and a half along with water and she bounced back. She was really weak for a couple of days, but is now completely recovered.

Best of luck, I hope they will be alright

Oh how terrible. Poor babies. I'm afraid I have no clue, as I haven't even got my first chickens yet. Hopefully someone will come along that can offer more.

Hoping for a full recovery.

I am not the most knowledgeable about these things but what about giving them some poly vi sol and some electrolytes in their water. Since you dont know how long they were without food, their system is probably off kilter. I would also try some yogurt in addition to what you are giving them. Were they without water as well? If it were me, I would get some vitamins and electrolytes into them and feed protein and yogurt in addition to their feed. I hope they make it. I would also have a long talk with the former housesitter!!!

wow, that is a scary story! i'm sorry for your babies, hope they get better for you. def fire that house sitter, hope you haven't paid her/he yet. they sound like they don't deserve it! just awful.

You can give them poultry nutri drench directly from the bottle, a couple of drops given orally, do this twice daily for 2-3 days (I recommend you use an eyedropper) ...then add some to their water for 3 more days....then stop altogether.

If they are in shock give them honey, you can try giving them some yogurt, but I think you will just have to feed them and wait and see.
