If they're 2' wide, 2' high and 3' long, that's about 12 sq ft each. With one sq ft per person, 3 girls to a boy, I could have 3 families or 9 females per crate.

I see a math error. These are 12 cubic feet. Only 6 square feet. That is enough for 6 birds if you like them at absolute max capacity, or 3 birds if you want to be a bit more humane.

I would give them more than 1 square foot per bird. At least double.

Not as hard as it sounds. I bought two today and when I asked my husband to put them in the shed, he pointed out that I already had two! LOL

Also, putting multiple males together, especially in such a small space, is a blood bath waiting to happen.

Males are SO high maintenance! OK, fine. I guess if I'm starting off for the eggs, the boys can wait until later. If I'm hatching them myself, I can send them off to freezer camp.

I don't want to sound rude or negative, but I'm just trying to help inform you of typical japanese quail behaviour.

Hi! No, not a math error. One comment up from that, I'd said that I wanted to add a second floor so there's more room. I'm still not sure of the logistics, but what have I got to do lose?

The funny part is that I googled using a dog crate to make a two story quail house... and ran across a post about exactly that here on BYC. The *really* funny part is that I was the author, back nearly a decade ago.
