Okay so here's the story. We bought 8 chickens from a breeder last summer around August. The person we bought them from assured us that they were all girls. 5 of them were all fully grown. Three of them were younger and hadn't started laying yet. After we got them we began getting about a dozen eggs every two days and they all seemed to be laying really well except for the smallest which was only about 12 weeks when we got her. Since then with our first winter here two of them have started crowing. One is a Buff Cochin, the other I think might be a mix because it has the pantaloons like the cochins but it is a gray and white spotted color. They both have developed the red under their chin more than before and they have started crowing each day. Can hens turn into roosters? Any ideas?

Your picture didn't show up. I have heard of stories of hens crowing but it's very, very, very, rare. Did I say very? I've never had a hen crow. I believe it's safe to say even without the pictures that the two crowers are 100% ROOS.

I will try and get some pictures tomorrow when I go out to the barn of the actual chickens. My sister and I bought the chickens but they are at her house. When I was out doing chores the chickens were crowing like roosters. We finally zeroed in on who was doing the crowing but I was pretty sure that those same birds gave us eggs in the summer. Could they just have been sitting on other chickens eggs?

I have Roos that sit around all hen-like. I've read where some sit in a nest, just because 'everyone else is doing it' or b/c its comfy. Why is having a roo a problem? Can't have one? I'm sure you can find a good home for him.

Having a rooster isn't really a problem unless of course you expect it to lay eggs. Lol. The main problem is that we got 8 chickens to lay eggs and then two of them are Roosters (maybe) and not hens. My main question is if they are Roos and not hens is that too many Roos for the other 5 chickens or will it be okay to have those two with the 5 chickens? They are awfully sweet and so if they will be okay with the hens we would love to keep them.

Here is a picture of them. Let me know what you think.
