Following the instructions, humidity has held steady at about 50% Lockdown started last night. I added water to both wells, and put in the plug. Humidity is only up to 58% today. Is this OK? Should I add sponges? I'm surprised it didn't go up more, between adding water to the second well and putting in the plug. Thanks for any help!

Yes, it's all sealed. As I remember, it did this last year too, and I had poor hatches on my shipped eggs (though great hatches on my own eggs.)
I just lifted the lid (GASP!!) and added warm water to the last reservoir. We'll see what that does!

I hope you're subscribed to this, tellynpeep. What happened?! The same thing is happening to me right now.

The lid is on and both wells are filled but humidity hasn't changed much--exactly 58% like yours. Did your babies hatch?

I just posted on another thread that I had the opposite problem with my 1588. I couldnt keep the humidity consistant. It would stay 50% but of course, when I went to bed and got up the next morning it would read 20-25%!! Or it would be ok but when I got home it would be down low on the humidity. Ive seen on other posts to add a wet sponge, paper towel, or even add water to another well as it has several. I didnt even put in my plug when I went into lockdown and it stayed around 70% for the hatch. I had in a dozen eggs and all but one hatched. It looked like she quit about halfway along as there was still alot of yolk in the egg. But I still had a pretty good hatch in it despite the humidity fluctuations.

Hi-I am glad this thread was started. I am testing my 1588 as we speak. I calibrated the hygrometer (actually two of them) and one was spot on. The second one was off by 2%. I put them both in there to see what they will read in the incubator for a day or two before the eggs come. The one that is correct is reading 50%. This is with the red plug in place. From what I read the humidity from day 1-18 should be 55-60%. Then after day 18 raise it to 65-70%.
My first question is - do I leave the red plug in place for the first time frame?
Second question-Seems like 50% is too low. Would you recommend adding more water than the middle section? And how does one figure this out except by trial and error?

Thanks

I just leave red plugs in its place.
If the humidity is too high, I remove them one by one (between several hours), and if humidity is too lose, I put damp (wet) towels or sponge in bator.
I don't lockdown eggs until I have steady temp and humidity.
Once I get the right humidity, I put the eggs in bator quickly and close the lid asap.

I have the new Genesis 1588 and there is only 1 red plug. The highest I got the humidity up to this weekend was a little above 50%. Does that sound ok? When I put a wet paper towel in there it went up to 65% so that should work for lock down. yes?

I have followed the directions, had the bator setup for 2 days, took out some of the water from the two inside wells and still over 58% humidity..Mostly in the 60's?? Not sure why...Anyone have any suggestions> I have 3 hygrometers and they all read within 3% of each other...maybe I should cover part of the wire with aluminum foil?

I just want to set my eggs tonight Gees!
