How a bookkeeper built a coop. :)

I have to say that I was extremely worried about the inadequacy of my coop in these frigid temperatures and 40 mph winds.

Reading nightmarish stories of other folks' misfortunes really had me fretting.

I made some tweaks in hopes to better serve my little friends.

I lowered the upper roost (the one they're sitting on in pic) down to the lower bracket to give more space above their little heads. I removed the other roost temporarily as they only sit on this one anyway. Then off-centered the remaining roost towards the nest box side.

Plexiglass now covers the small rectangular window to minimize draft.

Under the nest box I placed a piece of metal roofing horizontally to block wind under the coop as well as adding a piece of rubber material (same as I used on the nest box lid) to the front side under the coop. Back side was already plywood as it faced north. Large rectangular window is still wide open.

So far...no frostbite or odd behavior. They act like it's sunny and 70 degrees. They come out of the coop each morning, get some grub (hanging under the coop) go scratch in the run...do their thing.

So, I must of accidentally did something right. :fl

Your doing the right thing watching and adapting as needed, what's in the hanging baskets.

Lol.... Well....Ambience lighting. Battery powered timer lanterns. I had a momentary lapse of reason and thought I might get eggies if the girls had more light time.

Basically they are just coop decor now. Lol

To increase egg laying during short days light must be added before sunrise. IIRC it takes quite some time to turn the egg laying mechanics back on once off. Also I'm finding out a lot depends on the breed of chicken. This spring I want to get a couple of Cinnamon Queens and a couple of Golden Comets... both lay 250-320 eggs a year. I can see some chicken math coming up. I have the roost space for sure now.

I have the timer set to come on at 3 AM and off 8 AM... Eh...my girls lay invisible eggs and I've come to accept that they are just feathered yard decor. :) Although I do check the nest box twice daily...just in case hell froze over and I got an egg. Oh wait...hell did freeze over...**sigh**...still no egg...

Well...the coop saga continues...

Some changes since October have taken place with an addition in the plans.

I originally wanted to build a Wood's coop this Spring as I feel that the design is indeed the best, however...I was unable to mitigate the cost down to a feasible level. So, I'm going to expand what I have...

This is what I have today...

I plan on making the addition in this corner to have it flush with the run. Also, raising the roof line of existing portion and addition to match that of the run.

I'm going to keep the coop as it is now just removing the perches to keep it as a nesting area or a broody palace if the opportunity arises.

Today I am prepping and painting the wall pieces.

I really like the addition of the table to support your wine glass inside the run. Looking great!
