How about a Thread for Embdens?

Quote: Niacin deficiency is a real issue for waterfowl. If they can't forage they usually will have more issues than a bird that's able to eat fresh grasses. If I have a hen that brooding I put her on high protein chick feed, usually 24%. Its loaded with good nutrients, and is also good for the goslings. I reduce the protein after the goslings hatch to prevent angel wing.

First Embden this year, hatched yesterday!

Uh-oh! I need some help here. I have a pair of embdens that have not been successful hatching for the last two years.

This year Lucy started laying at the end of February here in freezing NY and by the time I noticed she had two eggs and one was frozen solid and cracked. I started checking her nest several times a day and gathered the rest of them to incubate in the house. She is still laying and I have 10 eggs in one incubator and 6 in another.

The first batch is on Day 23 and when I turned them this afternoon I noticed at least three of them are wiggling. I wasn't going to lock them down for a couple more days. What should I do? This is my first time incubating goose eggs. Keep turning? Lockdown?

Quote: My thoughts too! The hens are always darker. There are more hatched, I haven't been able to get pics yet. All 3 hens are mothering, and BB the dad is loving it. Problem I am having is one hen is still laying, and the other girls keep stealing her eggs. Since my breeds are separated and penned for now I am hoping the non sitting hen will just continue watching the hatched goslings. She has taught them to eat from the feeder, but if I go into the pen they all scurry under the nonbrooding goose.

Quote: Thank you!

they do wiggle... it's normal Don't worry about lock down until day 28 OR they external pip

Thank you for that. I candled them and there is a decent size air sack and I can no longer see any movement because the rest of the egg has gone dark. I'm guessing that means it is full of gosling

I did keep turning them and let them cool for 10 minutes each evening and spritz them with water every time I turn. I've hatched chickens, turkeys, and ducks and figured it wasn't too different. None of the others twitched so early though so I got worried.

So do you mean I keep turning until day 28?
