How about a Thread for Embdens?

Ok, Backyard Friends... advice/direction is needed...

Petunia, my Embden Goose is having issues walking. I have spent hours and hours cruising BYC reading about this, that and the other and have learned SO MUCH from everyone! What a great site! Anyway, she doesn't seem to be having balance issues. She's not wobbly in her neck or head. No change in food habits, other than I've had snow on the ground for 3 days so not grass/weed nibbling and I would imagine it is dormant and not very nutritious anyway. I have 4 ducks as well that round out my wonderful little flock. They get flock raiser, free choice, and I don't see any reduction in volume being consumed. They also get a daily tray of some combo (or all of) kale, tomatoes, apples and whole grain oats. Every 3rd day or so they get a few tablespoons of plain yogurt on there as well. Also, just about every day, they get a thawed bag of peas. I've walked the property they free range on (not huge, just a very large backyard) and there is nothing suspicious.

She did it once yesterday afternoon, that I saw. Once today. She's fine walking along with everyone, but then I call "Here, Babies" and they all come running. Tunia took about 4 running steps and went all wobbly in the "knee/ankle" area and plopped down. Honked. Got up. Wobble step, wobble step run run run run... she's fine. Same thing today. I see no walking issues in anyone else other than they just really would rather not but when they choose to, they are fine. Everyone looks healthy. Sound healthy... Lord, do they sound healthy.

Here's what's different. SNOW ON THE GROUND. Not much. Not even an inch. But we've stayed below 32 so it's frozen. In the morning and right before bed, none of them like to walk in it and will walk a few steps, lay down and pull their feet up and then repeat. At least until late morning into mid afternoon when the temp has come up from the teens and the sun has taken the "icy" off the snow and it's squishy again. Something else... Yesterday, I had forgotten to empty their water bowls so I didn't have to crack ice in the a.m. so I set a plastic bowl out with water in it until I could get their 2 regular bowls cleaned out and filled as they hit the water as soon as I let them out in the a.m. Right as I was filling the regular bowls, everyone made a beeline for the new water and Tunia stepped into the other bowl. Then out into the snow. IDK... could she have got a little frostbite? I picked her last night when I saw her fall and looked at her feet and they look normal and healthy. I DID notice that the area in front of their water bowls was frozen this morning as I saw her slip as she was coming over for morning chow. I thought, HEY! They are ALWAYS at the water bowl all day long, maybe their little feets are getting too much cold. So I moved their bowls over 3 feet so they were just on dirt/grass/little snow. And all day she seemed fine. Then, just now, I went out for afternoon pea treat and they were all picking along the back fence. "Here, Babies!" and everyone beats feet and Petunia does the plop down trick after about 5 steps. Got up the same way as described above. Walked the rest of the way fine.

WTH?!!!

Any suggestions?

(P.S... I always feel bad that I write such a "book" when I post but I try to avoid everyone scratching their heads and thinking, "Gee, I wish she'd given us a little more info" and the resulting question and answer game. )

I also might add (I know, I know... there's more I just thought of
old.gif
), I have been outside a hundred times today spying on them. Oh, I have no doubt they know I'm there, but they aren't interested as I am nowhere near their gate to indicate I might be coming in with treats so it's business as usual among them. I have seen NO WOBBLE WHATSOEVER when Petunia is just meandering around nor any trouble getting up and down off the ground. Only when she takes of to run...

Ok, I'm done.

Update: When I went to put them to bed, Tunia was laying just inside the pen door. By laying, I mean just like any goose would. She got up in one try, but was kinda wobbly. She also didn't walk like normal... i.e... very deliberate, one foot delicately placed in front of the next. It was almost like once she was up, she couldn't bend her legs and kinda swung them a little out to the side to walk. But she only did that for 6 steps or so and then walked normal again. About 5 minutes later, after she'd been milling around a bit while I did the good-night routine, she had a hard time walking up her ramp into the coop. It is maybe about 2 foot long with a maximum rise of about 3 inches, so not steep at all. It is not covered, just plain wood. Usually has shavings strewn over it from the mad rush out in the morning.

I just don't know what direction I should take. Her personality seems the same and none of the ducks are acting like this. Except for the "wobble leg", she is talking, eating, drinking, preening, everything, like normal. I have picked her up, felt her everywhere, smelt her, checked her nares and eyes; she seems fine except for the periodic walking issue.

Brandilly a person who rescues duck told me today that geese can get frostbite on their feet.... Maybe warm with hairdryer not too close but near? I am not an experienced goose person (new at this) but would be nice to see what others have to say on this.... How to treat it if it IS frostbite.

Thanks, Kalsti... I was thinking I would bring her in for a warm bath tomorrow morn! We are having a cold snap; been down in the teens and single digits at night and maaaaybe low-mid 20's day. But that's pretty unusual for us. It should be coming back up by Tues. I just don't want things to get out of control. If she was doing it all the time, or wasn't eating or drinking, I would be much more freaked out. Which reminds me... I need to do my research about avian vets in this area; so that I am prepared should something handle that there is no home remedy for.

You explained very well...... You might want to blow dry them until they are warm. But I am thinking you may need some brewer's yeast that is a powder for animals. This has niacin in it and some other vitamins which will help with any leg issues on all your birds....

Geez, sorry Ruru! I hate trying to answer from my phone!!! Thanks for the tip on niacin. For some reason I thought it was only for when they were babies! I will get some first thing in the morning. I am also going to bring her in for a warm tubby and then I'll dry her really well before putting her back out. I have read vaseline on feet helps in cold weather but seem to recall only on chicken threads. (I read EVERYTHING! LOL!) Would this help my goose and ducks?

Hi, brewers yeast works wonders for my Francis. If I miss a couple of days she is pretty much down for the count. How old is your goose? Francie is 15 or more and has arthritis, which makes walking tough. I had her on medicine for a week, then spread it out over a couple of weeks, then finally changed over to one glucosamine pill (for people) each day along with her brewers yeast and she's doing well on this. If her feet are cold, definitely warm them up! Good luck!

Oh this is great! How much brewers yeast do you give them? Mix it in their dry food? My Joey is older also and has some arthritis. Thanks for the help!

I couldn't find brewer's yeast but at my local Wilco they had a vitamin supplement that has it in there. I bought that and put it in their water this morning. So far, I have witnessed no "wobbly leg" (Well?! What else am I supposed to call it?) I will be happy when our weather comes up above freezing in the days again! We had a cold snap pretty early this year. I will be prepared for the next one!

On a separate, comical note... I always use tepid to warm water in their bowls first thing in the morning to knock any remaining front out of their bowls. This morning, Kevin, my little (female) mallard decided that it was TUBBY TIME!!! She took over the biggest water bowl for a leisurely morning swim and made everyone else drink from the other bowl. Steam was ROLLING off them! They always do something that makes me laugh! They are like little clowns with feathers!!!

Thanks, too, for the heads up on what to do as my babies get older! They were all born in the spring this year so I don't have to worry about that (hopefully) for a time!

Merry Christmas, Everyone!
