how and when to feed 5 chickens

Could be rats, mice, or squirrels tipping it. I found that one of my stainless steel dog food dishes just fits, like a cap, on top. So there is nothing of interest there for either rodents or chickens. I would hang mine if I could, but alas, that particular feeder is outside. On top of the cap I have a piece of galvanized tin to keep the rain from getting into the feed at the bottom. Funky set up, but it's working for now.
