are you talking about my husband? lol Sure he is a great gardener and can water the garden just fine. Takes care of the animals no problems. One weekend my parents left for Branson and I had the flu. Chris was suppossed to water all of Mom's flowers...omg- they all looked dead when they returned! He just took a dipper and gave each hanging basket a dipper full and sprinkled some on all of the beds... Needless to day he had a flower watering lesson after they returned!
glad your chickies are all ok. Tough little buggers! Maybe they just ran out and weren't out of food or water for very long....hopefully.
My experience - there is no accounting for how other people think, (or how they subsitute desire for reason).
I was going to be gone overnight and asked my friend (who lived on the same acreage and had watched me every day taking of my new flock and enjoying the eggs) to simply close the coop door after sunset and secure the latch. I had put plenty of food and water inside the coop, and they also all they needed of food and water outside while they free-ranged. No run, didn't need one. I explained they put themselves to bed an hour or so before sunset and all would be on the roost and it would be no trouble to simply close the door and latch it.
How simple is that? Here is what happened. She decided she wanted to close the coop two hours before sundown, even though she would be home all evening and could have closed it after sunset. The seven hens were hanging around the coop like they do that time of day, casually winding down and getting ready to go in an hour. So she chased them around trying to shoo them into the coop or catch them and put them in the coop. Of course they flapped and squawked and didn't go in with this crazy lady chasing them around. Then she shut the coop door like I asked her to - with the hens outside!!!! So she told me how disgusted she was with them and went back to the house leaving them out, and wouldn't look at them again and to never ask her again for help. Didn't even go back out after sunset to shut the door -- because she shut the door with them outside!!!! And she is an educated competent person.
I came home next day to find them out, coop locked, hens couldn't get in to lay their eggs in the nest boxes and had laid them in the grass by the closed coop door.
