How are we going to make it?

We've been doing it for going on 9 months. It is hard, but you'll make it!

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

You may have to cut back on chickens, but I would consider keeping a small flock of dual purpose ones for eggs and meat. They'll feed you more than you pay to feed them if you keep it small.....

I'm so sorry y'all are going through this. I hope something picks up soon.

The good news is, when your chickies are ready to lay, you'll have free food! There are many nights we have eggs for dinner because on busy evenings, they're fast and easy to make, and FREE. It has saved us a lot of money because we don't get drive-thru nearly as much now!

I wouldn't sell you chicks just keep on moving forward and don't look back that is what I have had to do. Went from executive chef cooking for celebrities to a regular line cook making burgers. Chin up!!

God you all are amazing! And the DH just called I told him all your well wishes and he sends his thanks and appreciation. He's getting ready to hit the street and start putting in applications. I never knew I could be in a situation like this and still be so proud of him, so thankful for having him in my life.

Mrs. Green Thumbs :

Thank you all so much.... I think I'm in a bit of shock right now... and I keep trying to reassure him that we will be ok. I can tell he's really upset but he's trying to comfort me while I try to stay strong for him. This man is a survivor and he believes in hard work. This time without employment is going to be hard on his pride... on the bright side... if I find a way to salvage some wood he will have plenty of time to build the pen for me huh...

Another he can do to keep busy and bring in money is a Handyman service, hauling scrap metal, demolition etc.. .. My uncle did this after he was laid off , turned out to be such a good thing its now his full time job.. Also any good stuff he gets from salvaging can be used to make you more coops ...

Also I wouldnt get rid of your chicks .. Start giving them forage time if they dont have it already.. Feed them all your foodscraps, ask around at grocery stores for their toss out produce, day old breads etc... People have been keeping chickens thru ressesions and depressions , they are hardy animals and can make due with alot less then we give the credit for .. My girls always get grass clippings and they find tons of bugs and other goodies in them...

Mrs. Green Thumbs :

He's going to apply but a lot of the other guy's that we know that used to work there and got laid off had to fight to get their unemployment... took them a long time to get what they were owed.

If he was laid off, he is entitled to unemployment. If he was fired for cause, he is not. What grounds did the company use to fight unemployment for previous workers, and how did they resolve the issue? Finding that information out should help if they try to prevent him from collecting.

Are you sure that the two "kids" they kept earn the same wage? Typically experience increases the wage, and you said he had worked there for years.

Not true. Individuals do not pay for unemployment insurance. COMPANIES pay that expense (and it is not optional)
