That’s what I think is odd…we had the hotttst summer I can remember here in NY, w a couple nights in the low 80s which is unheard of. It seems like a never ending cycle…the virus might be killed at that temp but the carriers aren’t so I don’t think it’ll ever go away.

It’s killed at high temps if it’s just lying around in the environment, exposed, but yeah the virus living inside the wild birds will be just fine. A lot of them can live with it without dying (it’s less deadly to wild birds than to domestic poultry) so they keep spreading it.

The cold season is when the human flu viruses ramp up, so cold definitely is not a problem for them.

We're right up against the Chesapeake Bay, which is smack dab in the middle of the Atlantic Flyway ... and the geese are already on the move. UGH!

I guess my question would be how long does this type of outbreak usually last? Are we talking months, years or even longer?

We have the HPAI continued from from last fall till now. There where outbreaks in the chicken farming industry in Barneveld again very recently. The strict rules still apply in a large part of the Netherlands. Around Barneveld its not allowed to transport any poultry. Hobbyist may not free range their chickens.

The wise men say the AI is going to stay, and keeps mutating (like Covid). It will spread and kill communities of birds in nature from time to time in summer and winter.

But there is good news too. The Stern population that was diminished by the HPAI this spring did have survivors. These survivors seems to have managed to raise a lot of young birds and the young birds don’t die of the HpAI.

We're going into "Consecutive-Year-Two," as well. There was no break at all, this time. The scariest part of our area's outbreak is that it has hit the local Black Vulture community HARD. That, in itself is bad enough, but the vultures share territory with one of the larger Bald Eagle populations in the country, so it's being watched VERY closely. So far, so good ...
